Henri BECHARD (1869-1890) Cairo water carriers at rest, players, Egypt, 1870

          Est: €150 - €200

Henri BECHARD (1869-1890) Cairo water carriers at rest, players, Egypt, 1870 2 albumen prints 27 x 21 cm Henri Béchard was a French photographer active in Egypt in the 1870s and 1880s. His studio was set up in Cairo's Ezbekia Garden district in 1869. His work is distinguished by the superb quality of his prints and the generally spectacular presentation of sites such as the pyramids. His studies of people and scenes of daily life are most often taken from unusual angles, in an attempt to adapt to the narrow, confined spaces, showing a very personal involvement in the life and customs of the country.

Béchard, Henri: Views of Egypt: Port of Assuan; Thèbes

          Est: €600 - €900

Views of Egypt: Port of Assouan; Thèbes, Valley of the Kings. Mid-1870s. 2 albumen prints. 27 x 37,5 cm. Photographer's name in lower right corner, numbered and titled in lower left in the negative, mounted to board (slightly buckled), collector's stamp in lower right corner on the mount. Béchard produced some of the most well-composed and endearing photographs of Egypt. They are rarer than photos by Sebah, Bonfils, Arnoux and Zangaki, as the studio only worked from the 1870s-1880s, whereas the other studios were still producing work throughout the 1890s. The prints offered here are signed by H.(enri) Béchard but prints signed by Émile Béchard, who might have been his brother or even the same person, also exist. - A few light surface scuff marks, minimal fading in right and lower edge, otherwise strong prints with a rich violet-brown tone and in very good condition. Provenance: Robert Lebeck Collection Lit.: Ken Jacobson. Odalisques and Arabesques: Orientalist Photography 1839 - 1925. London 2007, see pp. 210-212.
