      • 16th C. Gaspar Becerra Crucified Christ
        Sep. 28, 2023

16th C. Gaspar Becerra Crucified Christ

        Est: -

Crucified Christ made of carved, polychrome and gilded wood. Christ is presented dead, with his head lowered, slightly tilted to our left. Eyes closed and mouth ajar. The stigmata of the passion can be seen on the side, feet and hands, in addition to the crown of thorns carved in the same central piece. Purity cloth at mid-thigh and tied on the right side. *The state of conservation of the piece is good, it presents losses in the polychrome and gilding, as is typical of the passage of time. Half a phalanx of one of the fingers of the right hand is missing. The plucking of the locks shows fractures. Regarding the work of Gaspar Becerra, respect for the treatment of iconography is observed in the work. Appreciable in the presentation of Christ, his anatomy and proportions. This links the piece to the current of Romanism, an artistic movement closely related to the aforementioned Becerra or Juan de Anchieta (c. 1533 - 1588), among others. Provenance: - Spanish private collection - Feriarte, edition December 1989. Greca Antiques Barcelona

      • GASPAR BECERRA - Santa Barbara

        GASPAR BECERRA - Santa Barbara

        Est: -

Attributed to Gaspar Becerra (Baeza 1520 - Madrid 1568) "Santa Bárbara" Sculpture in carved, polychrome, gilt and stewed wood. The saint appears with one of her attributes: the tower. Its excavated rear part suggests that it would be part of an altarpiece to which it would be attached. faults. Attached is a study by Dr. Rosario Coppel Areizaga in Art History, who compares our carving with the figure of Mary in the relief of Jesus among the Doctors of the Cathedral of Astorga and sees similarity both in the hands and in the proportions flattening of the body. He also finds similarities in the combination of colors and in the sgraffito of vegetal and geometric motifs with the same qualities as in the Astorga altarpiece. Despite being one of the most relevant figures in the Spanish art scene at the end of the 16th century, there are few biographical data on the author, as well as few documented works of his authorship, perhaps because many of them were destroyed by fire. Becerra must have trained in his father's family workshop, a second-rate artist, before going to Rome to study at the Academy of Saint Luke. There he met Miguel Angel and his circle and even shared commissions with some of them, for which he got to know and handled the ornamental models of the great Roman decorations of the time and brought them to Spain, introducing them into art and initiating the Romanist aesthetic. Height: 86 cm
