      • Mark Beard Oil on Board with Salvaged Frame
        Oct. 29, 2024

Mark Beard Oil on Board with Salvaged Frame

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Mark Beard aka Bruce Sargeant (b. 1956) "Henry Hudson runs the Half Moon Aground, Gentrification of Hudson Begins" Oil on board 60.5" ht. x 42" wd. (sight) and 80" ht. x 57" wd. (frame); Whimsical, homoerotic depiction of Hudson surrounded by half-nude men, with two medallions in the upper corners, one reading 'Et Decus Et Pretium Recti' ('both the ornament and reward of virtue'), the other 'Caveat Emptor' ('Let the buyer beware'), unsigned, mounted in a period Gothic-Revival carved, painted, and gilded wood frame. Henry Hudson was an English navigator during the early 17th century, searching for the rumored Northwest Passage. He became the first European to see the Hudson Strait and the immense Hudson Bay. In 1611, after wintering on the shore of James Bay, Hudson wanted to press on to the west, but most of his crew mutinied. The mutineers cast Hudson, his son, and six others adrift; the Hudsons and their companions were never seen again.

      • MARK BEARD (1956-) Theatre of the Ridiculous
        Aug. 22, 2024

MARK BEARD (1956-) Theatre of the Ridiculous

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

MARK BEARD (1956-) Theatre of the Ridiculous Oil on cotton canvas in artist's original hand-painted frame. 1822x1574mm; 71¾x62 inches. Circa 1980s. Provenance: Commission by the artist (1980s); the Estate of Michael Feingold (2022). Commissioned by consummate theatre critic and translator Michael Feingold, Theatre of the Ridiculous is a life-sized genre painting by Mark Beard. Featured on the canvas are gay theatre figures Ethyl Eichelberger (1945-1990), Everett Quinton (1952-2023), Lola Pashalinski, and Charles Ludlam (1943-1987). The genre was founded and coined in 1965 by actor and director Ronald Tavel who brought elements of queer and camp performance to experimental theater. Cross-gender casting was common, as was casting non-professional actors were standard. Founded by John Vaccaro in the mid-1960s, the Play-House of the Ridiculous and the Ridiculous Theatrical Company acted as satirical parodies or adaptations of popular culture, used as vehicles for social commentary and humor. Born in Salt Lake City, Mark Beard uses multiple aliases to create various styles and methods of expression. Bruce Sargeant, Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon, and Brechtoldt Streeuwitz are three alter egos that allow him to produce different genres of painting. Sargeant, a fictional 20th-century British painter, creates homoerotic works that venerate the male physique. In addition to painting, he is a noted stage set designer, having designed more than 20 theatrical sets in New York, London, Cologne, Vienna, and Frankfurt.

MARK (BRUCE SARGEANT) BEARD AMERICAN, UTAH, NEW YORK, 1956- TERRY WOTHERSPOON AND JAMES CONWAY - DOUBLE SCULLS Oil on canvas Upper left signed: B. Sargeant; verso gallery label: Wessel O'Connor Gallery New York / Bruce Sargeant (Mark Beard) / Terry Wotherspoon & James Conway c. 1932 (1998) / oil on canvas / 44 x 66" / 54 ½ x 76 ½ in. Catalogue note: Born in Salt Lake City and currently based in New York, contemporary painter and stage set designer Mark Beard employs the use of several alter-egos to explore various styles in his art. The most prominent of these is Bruce Sargeant (1898-1938), whose oeuvre consists of homoerotic depictions of the male physique, particularly Adonis-like athletes. Although "Terry Wotherspoon" and "James Conway" are not real rowers, this composition is likely based on photographs of British rowers Jack Beresford and Leslie Southwood taken after the pair's victory at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Beard's work as Sergeant has been the subject of solo exhibitions at CLAMP (New York, NY) and Carrie Haddad Gallery (Hudson, NY). Beard's art is included in major permanent collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), among others.

Mark Beard (American, b. 1956) Suicide II, circa 2013-14 Oil on canvas 60 x 36 inches (152.4 x 91.4 cm) PROVENANCE: Life as a Work of Art, New York; Private collection, Miami, Florida, acquired from the above, 2014. The New-York-based artist Mark Beard is well known for his work as a painter and international set designer. In his artistic practice Beard paints in the aesthetic personas of five, imaginary artists whose styles differ one from the other. To create this work, Beard painted as Bruce Sargeant (1898–1938), a play on the famous American artists John Singer Sargent whose portraits are internationally revered. "Suicide II" is a major work from Beard's/Sargeant's "Suicide Series". As a comment on the futility of war and acts of terror, each work in the series depicts a soldier or first responder from a major American conflict. The soldier in this painting wears a Civil War uniform referencing the millions of American killed in that conflict. Beard's works are found in significant museum collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, the Albertina in Vienna, as well as in the art museums of Princeton, Harvard, and Yale Universities. MARK BEARD (1956 - ) Two Rowers, 1936. Oil on cotton canvas, 914x609 mm; 36x24 inches. Signed in oil, upper left. 1998. Provenance: Wessel + O' Connor Gallery, New York, with gallery label on the frame back. Born in Salt Lake City, Mark Beard uses multiple aliases to create various styles and methods of expression. Bruce Sargeant, Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon, and Brechtoldt Streeuwitz are three alter egos that allow him to create. Sargeant, a fictional 20th-century British painter, creates homoerotic works that venerate the male physique. In addition to painting, he is a noted stage set designer, having designed more than 20 theatrical sets in New York, London, Cologne, Vienna, and Frankfurt.
