Alan Bean Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1932 - d. 2018

A truly unique painter, artist Alan Bean did not begin his career in the art world, but rather as an astronaut for the United States NASA program. Born in Texas in 1932, he went on to study aeronautical engineering, but later left his job at NASA to pursue painting full-time. He was the fourth man on the moon as part of the Apollo 12 mission, and spent a second mission orbiting the Earth, both of which inspired the subjects of later Alan Bean paintings.

Artist Alan Bean strove to bring his experiences in space, particularly on the moon, to life through his work. He used lunar tools to add texture to his paintings and often sprinkled moon dust on them or stamped them with an Apollo boot model, adding to the value of Alan Bean lunar art for sale. You can find other artists' unique collectible history paintings for sale at Invaluable.

            Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Featured in this lot is the Limited Edition Signed Textured Canvas Print, "Reaching For The Stars" by Alan Bean, #806/1500. In Alan Bean's own words, "Reaching for the Stars is a painting of a universal astronaut-symbolizing everyone who flew in Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz. It also represents those who fly in space shuttles and will fly on the space station and on future missions only dreamed about at this time. The astronaut is truly an emissary of us all, soaring away from the planet Earth an traveling as far as it is humanly possible to go with the technology available in our age. Although we haven't yet explored distant stars, we are moving inexorably in that direction. But, in a broader view, this lone human figure not only symbolizes those of us in the astronaut profession , but any of us that possess a dedicated and adventurous spirit, no matter what our interest or age. I painted this astronaut, this star sailor, to represent the best in each of us-what we can accomplish and who we can be-if we can create the courage and determination to move in the direction of our dreams. It is up to each of us to keep reaching for our own stars, and to understand that they are not light years distance, but as close as our workplace, our home, and our family." A Greenwich Workshop Multiple-Signed Douc-Art Limited Edition Fine Art Textured Canvas Print. It features a textured canvas surface recreating the "Moonprints" of authentic lunar boots, a core tube used to collect soil samples, and impressions from a hammer used to drive the staff of the American flag into the Moon's surface. This limited edition fine art textured canvas bears the original and authentic signatures of American space pioneers. Affixed hereto in the month of October, 1997, in support of the United States Astronauts Hall of Fame and the U.S. Astronauts Scholarship Foundation. This print is signed by: Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Jim McDivitt, Wally Schirra, Richard Gordon, Paul Weitz, Owen Garriott, Jack Lousma, Jerry Carr, Ed Gibson, Bill Pogue, Tom Stafford, Walt Cunningham, Rusty Schweickart, Buzz Aldrin, Charles Conrad Jr., Alan Bean, James Lovell, Fred Haise, Edgar Mitchell, Al Worden, Charlie Duke. Alan Bean Signed Limited Ed. "Lunar High Five" Fine Art Giclée On Canvas

            Est: $300 - $400

Alan Bean Signed Limited Ed. "Lunar High Five" Fine Art Giclée On Canvas A limited edition fine art giclée on canvas after an original acrylic painting by Alan Bean (1932-2018), Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut and amateur artist. The giclée print is signed and inscribed by Bean in gold metallic felt tip marker, as "Alan Bean / Apollo 12" in the lower left corner, as well as numbered 95/400. Bean worked with students and staff of the Talcott Mountain Science Center and Academy (Bloomfield, Connecticut) to develop the concept behind the work, entitled "Lunar High Five." The limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop, Inc. (Shelton, Connecticut). Also signed in stone as "Alan Bean / © 1997 & 2000" near center left. Printed in vivid colors on canvas and framed; a Novaspace (Tucson, Arizona) label is found on the bottom stretcher. Not examined out of the frame. Near fine. The sight size of the giclée is 15.25" x 18.25" while the overall framed size is 16.5" x 19.5" x 1.75." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity providing more information about Bean, the Talcott Mountain Science Center and Academy, and the printing run. "Lunar High Five" depicts a moment that never actually happened in Space, but that Bean imagined would have perfectly encapsulated the triumph of the successful Apollo 12 mission: a joyous high-five exchanged between Bean and fellow Apollo 12 crew member Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr. Speaking of the work, Bean later explained: "We were so happy and excited about getting ready to do the productive work we had trained long and hard to do, that a high-five would have felt just right…" The Certificate of Authenticity states in part: "This limited edition fine art giclée canvas, published by The Greenwich Workshop, Inc., ha[s] been produced from the artist's original acrylic painting by means of ink-jet printing by Hunter Editions. Each canvas has been personally approved and signed by the artist and consecutively numbered. All materials used in the production of this canvas have been destroyed…" Alan Bean went to space twice; the first time as Lunar Module Pilot during the November 14 - 24, 1969 Apollo 12 mission, and the second time as Commander of the July 23 - September 25, 1973 Skylab 3 mission. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Commemorating July 20th, 1969, the day humans set foot on the Moon, and honoring all astronauts who took part in the Apollo program. "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". Alan Bean gives the story behind the image: "I knew that creating a painting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first lunar landing and the total Apollo program would be difficult. I wanted it to show some of the more important things we did on the Moon and, most of all, the spirit of the adventure as we astronauts experienced it. But how does one show in a single painting the dedication, the intensity, the self-sacrifice, the sense of duty, history and patriotism that engulfed us all in our quest for the Moon? I didn't know if it could be done, but I began... I enjoyed creating ‘In the Beginning...' in this way because it was created just like Apollo. It was not the handiwork of any one person but of many dedicated people working together to make an ages-old dream come true..." Keywords: Memorabilia; Ref: BD2021

            Est: $40,000 - $60,000

ALAN BEAN (American/Texas 1932-2018) A PAINTING, "Load 'Em Up...Move 'Em Out," 1986, acrylic on panel, signed and dated L/L, "Alan Bean©1986," verso museum loan label, Butler Museum of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. 23" x 20" Note: Missions served by Astronaut Alan Bean: Apollo 12 (launched November 14, 1969) and Skylab 3 (launched July 28, 1973). Fourth astronaut to walk on the Moon. Total Spacetime: 1,671 hours and 45 minutes. The story according to Alan Bean himself,The highest priority task Pete Conrad and I were scheduled to accomplish during our first moonwalk on Apollo 12 was the deployment of an unmanned geophysical station. We called it ALSEP, an acronym for Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, and it consisted of a cluster of six experiments all connected to a central command and control station and powered by the first thermonuclear electrical power generator on the Moon.I have painted myself attaching the ALSEP components to either end of a lightweight metal bar. This "high tech barbell" was the best way we could think of to carry all this hardware to a relatively flat spot 300 feet away so the experiments wouldn't be blown over or covered with dust when we blasted off the Moon the next day. The waste-basket-shaped object on the near end of the bar is the seismometer. It measures moonquakes or meteoroid impacts; and, as surprised scientists discovered, our footsteps as we moved about our tasks. The magnetometer with its gold foil-covered sensor arms is just below. In my right hand you can see the bottom of the thermonuclear electric power generator. I can distinctly remember feeling the intense heat from the decaying plutonium fuel element - even through my heavily insulated suit. I wondered if the dedicated and able suit makers on Earth had anticipated this heat and built the suit to withstand it. But I didn't have time to worry about it then. We had to get on with our work. It was time to "load 'em up, and move 'em out."   Provenance: Houston Museum of Natural Science, loan 2006-2011.

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition "Reaching for the Stars" Textured Canvas Color

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition "Reaching for the Stars" Textured Canvas Color Print, #562/1500, with Twenty-Seven Astronaut Signatures.  A 27" x 34" canvas stretched on a wooden frame. These were produced from an original acrylic by space artist and moonwalker Alan Bean in 1997 and signed by the astronauts attending an induction ceremony and reunion at the Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville, Florida, in October 1997. The felt tip signatures included on this amazing piece include: " Alan Shepard", " John Glenn", " Scott Carpenter", & " Gordon Cooper" (all representing Mercury), " Jim McDivitt", " Wally Schirra", " Gene Cernan", & " Richard Gordon" (representing Gemini), " Walt Cunningham", " Rusty Schweickart", " Gene Cernan", " Buzz Aldrin", " Charles Conrad Jr", " Alan Bean", " James Lovell", " Fred Haise", " Edgar Mitchell", " Al Worden", " Charlie Duke", & " Gene Cernan" (all representing Apollo), " Paul Weitz", " Owen Garriott", " Jack Lousma", " Jerry Carr", " Ed Gibson", & " Bill Pogue" (all representing Skylab), and " Tom Stafford" (representing Apollo-Soyuz). Most of these prints feature twenty-four signatures; the previous owner had Gene Cernan sign for his three missions at a later date. Very fine. Alan Bean describes this painting in his book Apollo: An Eyewitness Account: "In one sense this is a painting of a universal astronaut, symbolizing everyone who flew in Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz. It also represents those who fly on space shuttles and will fly on a space station and on future missions only dreamed about at this time. The astronaut is an emissary of us all, soaring away from our planet earth... But in a broader view [Reaching for the Stars symbolizes] all of us who possess a dedicated and adventurous spirit no matter what our interests or age." HID01801242017

            Est: $35,000 -

"Beyond a Young Boy's Dream" Textured Acrylic on Board By Alan Bean, 4th Man To Walk on the Moon, and Celebrated Artist. Alan Bean (1932-2018) was an American naval officer and naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He flew on Apollo 12, where he was the fourth man to walk the lunar surface, and Commander of Skylab 3. He retired in June of 1981 to dedicate his time to painting, sharing worlds he experienced first hand that could be expressed through his art. His works have been on exhibit in every major museum in the US, with a large exhibition of his works having been hosted at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C."Beyond a Young Boy's Dream" (1989). Prior to painting this work, Bean covered the surface of the board with a special texturing compound that he developed containing among other things, a bit of the charred heatshield and small pieces of Kapton foil from the Apollo 12 Command Module. Then he worked the texturing compound with his hammer and a sharp edged bit (actually flown to the moon) as well as using the soles from exact replicas of his moon boots until he achieved the rough and irregular surface on which to paint. The results are spectacular.Bean describing this particular work: "When I was a boy, I dreamed of airplanes. I built airplanes of balsa wood with rubber band or noisy gasoline engines. By the time I was in high school, model airplanes of all shapes and sizes were hanging from the ceiling of my room. Airplanes were the last things I would see before falling asleep at night. I dreamed of flying higher than the highest cloud and faster than the fastest wind. As I grew older, the dream grew even stronger. When I completed flight training, and my mother pinned on my naval wings of gold...when I was a jet pilot flying off tiny grey aircraft carriers on vast blue oceans... when I was a test pilot flying all the Navy's test aircraft to their limits...and when as an astronaut I was training to rocket to the distant white moon in a silver spaceship. Well, here I am standing on the moon. To reach this distant world, I flew higher than any cloud and faster than any wind. I am living much more than my boyhood dream. But even as I look out over the magnificently desolate lunar surface, other little girls and boys are building model rocket spaceships, dreaming of flying higher than the moon and faster than a shooting star."33 1/2 x 23 1/2 beautifully framed to 40 x 31" (with custom crate.) Artwork is in perfect condition. Also conveying is a signed poster of a painting by Alan Bean "America's Team, Just the Beginning" on permanent exhibition at Space Center Houston Museum on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Apollo 11.
