A.BAYER(1803-1875), Monk at the window in front of Cistercian abbey, 19th c., Pencil

    Est: €1,200 - €1,800

August von Bayer (1803 Rorschach - 1875 Karlsruhe), Monk at the window in front of Cistercian Abbey, ink over pencil Inscription: Upper right monogrammed: "AvB". Provenance: Artaria Collection, Vienna. Description: Born in 1803 in Rorschach on Lake Constance, August von Bayer first studied architecture under Friedrich Weinbrenner and later devoted himself to architectural painting in Munich, Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden. His poetically conceived views of churches, monasteries and chapels found great recognition among the higher nobility. Among the circle of his admirers and patrons were King Frederick William IV and the King of Hanover, Ernst August I. Despite his scientific training, von Bayer's painterly work tended towards a transcendental, sometimes even religious interpretation of nature in the tradition of the Romantics, above all Caspar David Friedrich. A heavy curtain has been drawn to reveal the view from the window. A monk stands in front of it with his back to the viewer. We see only part of his profile, enough to notice his full immersion in what we see. The barren walls of the monastery and the idyll of the hilly landscape by the lake form two parallel worlds. While the interior symbolizes the limitedness of earthly existence, the landscape outside promises eternal life. The church on the shore is its guarantor. The small sailboats are signs of the journey of life: under the protection of Christ, the helmsman, the faithful will arrive safely at the place of their destiny. Here, as in the work of Friedrich and many other 19th century artists, the window is a symbol of longing. But while the Romantics declared longing to be a perfect state and expected no fulfillment, in von Bayer's work the window is the expression of unshakable hope for heavenly bliss. Keywords: Romanticism, Pencil, Objective, Germany
