Auction: Vendu Notarishuis, Rotterdam, 22-28 June 1978, lot 38. ------------------- David Bautz was born in 1884 in The Hague, which is where he also completed his schooling at the Academy of Arts. 19th century The Hague was a superb environment for a painter. The Mauritshuis offered much inspiration, the light and atmosphere were phenomenal and the ladies were dignified. It was specifically those ladies, an inspiration for all artists, who inspired the beautiful nudes that Bautz created. Free from the influence of ‘Courtisanisme’ Bautz’s nudes are symbols of the inner beauty of the subject, not so much the outside beauty. His love for everything pure and beautiful shines through in de soft lines and curves, the glowing colours and the way he painted the light. This way, even a courtesan remains free of immorality.
