    J. BAUR (1607-1640), Apollo und Daphne, Etching

    Est: €300 - €400

Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607 Strasbourg - 1640 Vienna): Apollo and Daphne transforming into a tree, 17th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Baur. fc.". Date: 17th century Description: The etching shows Apollo pursuing the fleeing Daphne with outstretched arms, while her body is already transforming into a laurel tree - her arms have become branches and her foot is beginning to take root in the ground. The scene illustrates an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses, in which Daphne, in order to escape Apollo's unwanted desire, asks her father Peneios, the river god, for help and is then transformed into a tree. The motif emphasises the classic theme of persecution, unrequited love and transformation, which has been taken up many times in the history of art. Estimation 7 000 - 10 000 €
