Gustave Baumann Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Water colorist, Etcher, Wood cutter, Engraver, Illustrator, b. 1881 - d. 1971

German artist Gustave Baumann (b.1881) immigrated to the United States in 1891 and lived in Chicago. After his father left in 1896, he took on the responsibility of caring for his family. He sold his drawings to make money, and eventually he became an apprentice at the Franklin Engraving Company. Artist Gustave Baumann did all of his own carving, ink mixtures, printing, and careful selection of handmade paper to print on.

Gustave Baumann artwork for sale includes intricate woodcut prints that all have his signature seal, a hand over a heart. In 1915, his color woodcuts won the gold medal for prints at the Panama Pacific International Exposition. Woodblock carvings of the landscapes of Chicago and Santa Fe, where he moved in 1919, are popular Gustave Baumann prints. Past History 8" x 11" colored woodblock print, signed lower right, 11/125. Full-sheet (see images). Martin Krause, recently retired curator at Newfields was kind enough to provide this insight on the Baumann print: "Past History" features the pictographs from the cave dwellings in Frijoles Canyon, now in Bandelier National Monument near Los Alamos west of Santa Fe. The nature of the landscape and the native American cultural artifacts inspired the modernist prints that Baumann toyed with in the 40s or 50s including this one. It’s a work that is rarely seen -- perhaps owing to a drop in interest in Baumann’s work at this point in his career.

Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Madgeburg, Germany, Gustave Baumann is best known for prints made from his detailed hand-carved wood blocks. His family emigrated to the United States when he was a child, and he grew up in Chicago. He returned to Germany to study in Munich at the Kunstgewerbe Schule and then took further training at the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent time in Indiana, and is much associated with the artists who gravitated to Brown County. In that state, Bauman made woodblocks illustrating work by Indiana authors. Baumann and several other artists decided to see first hand the reportedly light, clear air of New Mexico that they had been hearing about from other Chicago artists, and in 1918, he settled in Santa Fe where, for over fifty years, he participated in the art community. He created colored wood blocks from which he made prints, and also became a carver of saints and marionettes, working the the Marionnette Theater, and carving his 'little people'. He also did numerous paintings in bright colors. His woodcut subjects are church figures, scenes of sacred Indian pictographs, and landscapes including the Grand Canyon. During the 1930s, he was WPA co-ordinator for Santa Fe. Source: Peggy and Harold Samuels, Encyclopedia of Artists of the American West
