Painter, Illustrator, b. 1884 - d. 1956

(b 1884; d 1956) American Impressionist painter, Walter Emerson Baum was born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania in 1884. He spent his entire career working there, capturing scenes from the surrounding landscape during plein air painting excursions, often with his wife Flora by his side. He is best known for his landscapes, executed during the 1920s and 30s, which depict small rural houses in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Later in his career, he abandoned oil paint in favor of tempera and casein and this move corresponds to a decline in the quality of his work. Baum was a beloved teacher as well, and he helped to found the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum. Today his work is included in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as numerous other museum collections.

            Offered is a large oil on canvas painting by Walter Emerson Baum (American, 1884-1956). Signed lower left, titled "Autumn", circa 1940. Sight seen approx. 49-1/2" x 39-1/2", overall frame size approx. 59" x 49". Titled on the verso of canvas and signed "W.E. Baum" below. Also affixed on the verso is a label from Philip & Muriel Berman Museum of Art, and verso of canvas is also signed "Mr. & Mrs. Phil Berman". Under UV light, no evidence of in-painting. This is a great painting with Sotheby's Provenance, as it was previously sold in March 2008 in a Sotheby's sale.

A painter, critic, author, and educator, he was the only one of the Pennsylvania Impressionists to be born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. To many, he was considered the “father of art in the Lehigh Valley.”
