Idyllically the snow-covered houses nestle up to the rocks, with the castle throning on top of the mountain. The broad lines, the impasto paint, partly applied with a palette knife, as well as the harmonious color scheme endow the work with a dynamic character. But even if the forms are partially abstracted, the authentic character of the picturesque mountain village is not lost. The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘MFRANKBauer 35’. It is in good condition with craquelure in places as well as a few tiny color chips here and there. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 79 x 91 cm, the stretcher frame measures 67.5 x 79 cm. Michael Frank Bauer (d. 1940) Michael Frank Bauer attended the Academy in Vienna, where he studied under Sigmund L'Allemand, Christian Griepenkerl and Rudolf Bacher. He undertook several study trips to Southern France, Yugoslavia and Italy. From the 1920s onwards he was active in Vienna. His oeuvre includes landscapes, figurative compositions and flower pieces.
