The period of the work's creation and the period immediately preceding it was not an uplifting one for Jan Bauch. The promoters of socialist realism imposed on the public an art that was understandable and uplifting and that would correspond to ideological demands. Jan Bauch recalls the period when he could not exhibit: "I had a bad time. When I left my apartment to go to work, there was already an secret police waiting in the street and he walked me to the studio, where another one was standing and smiling. They never did anything to me, they didn't beat me up or arrest me, but one didn't exactly have uplifting thoughts while working." Jan Bauch's art absorbed this challenge and manifested the inner struggles quite faithfully. Blindly following the idyllic world was considered by Jan Bauch to be cowardice and humanity, and he saw the quality of the spirit in the fact that while the ordinary person can remain silent about the "clamour of the world" and wallow in laxity, the role of the artist is to unsettle, to speak out against threats to values and to fight. It is a unique sculpture in wood by the important Czech painter and sculptor Jan Bauch, who confronted the craft of carving at an early age in his father's workshop. In addition to his important painting work, Bauch's talent as a sculptor also developed. In the 1930s, Jan Bauch collaborated with the sculptor Karel Pokorný and won second prize in a competition for the door of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague for his allegory of human life from birth to death. He also co-authored with sculptor Jan Lauda the monumental sculpture The Overthrow of Czechoslovakia, intended for the World Exhibition in New York. Both his paintings and sculptures carry elements of inner tension inspired by the Baroque legacy. The offered sculpture of a reclining Ulysses, with which Jan Bauch is also photographed in person, represents the artist's return to the medium of sculpture in 1962. JAN BAUCH 1898 - 1995 - VILLON

        Est: -

Villon is one of the central themes of Jan Bauch's work, where he searched for new artistic outlets. Jan Bauch focuses on the problems of contemporary man and his place in a world full of conflicts and soothing glitter. Restlessness is the source of his inspiration and he refuses to accept the self-preservation position of art, which moves in the direction of beauty and illusion. François Villon liked to mock society and, for example, pastoral poetry written by nobles who drowned in luxury and never knew the countryside. The gesture of the raised hand is just such an upsurge of resistance to pathos. Bauch uses art as a cry for the freedom of the spirit, he does not hide the dark positions of being, the bizarre or the war. We cannot deny the structure of the human face to the work of Villon, which reveals Bauch's love for sculpture. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower left: Jan Bauch 1959

JAN BAUCH 1898 - 1995 - STILL LIFE WITH A JUG AND GRAPES

        Est: -

From the expert opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová, Ph.D.: "The assessed painting Still Life with a Jug and Grapes is an original, supremely poetic, sensually extraordinarily rich work by Jan Bauch, an author whose painting, unmistakable by its expressiveness and accentuated color, is an example and in many ways the embodiment of the struggle on the continuity of the values of the development of Czech modern art. It is a manifestation of a dynamic temperament sparked both by the view of inspiring reality and by the ideas of the creation of the greats of European culture. The assessed painting Still Life with a Pitcher and Grapes, which according to the full-page color reproduction in the 26th year of Free Directions (1929) was appreciated by both the author and the professional board of this magazine published by the Association of Fine Artists Mánes, is a beautiful example of how they synthetically connected contemporary tendencies of lyrical transformation of reality and also sounds of imaginative painting. The bearer of his artistic opinion became an expression whose building material is color. In this chamber-tuned canvas, the painter lets his sensual relationship to reality and the subtle feeling for its substantiation be heard. The magic of poetic color nuances is not an end in itself here: it is a prerequisite for the emotions and lyrical emotions evoked in the viewer." From the expert assessment by PhDr. Rea Michalová Ph.D. of the world and lived times, as well as imaginative ideas and dreams. The essence and meaning of Bauch's canvases became the expression to which he subordinated everything. until I conquered them by painting. In the painting in question, Jan Bauch masterfully captured the delicate beauty of a young woman in a semi-nude who decorated her hair with a living flower. The author's "ruffled", expressive handwriting seems to literally reflect the words once uttered by sculptor August Rodin: "The body is a model shaped by passion." Although Jan Bauch underwent purely classical training under Emil Dítě, Vratislav Brunner and Max Švabinský, his oeuvre is anything but a reflection of the classic view of depicting the seen world. Over the course of time Bauch's work featured many different positions, but the subject area essentially remained the same. Women are one of his frequent subjects. This portrait of a woman is eloquent proof of the artist's attempt at strongly expressive expression, which asserts itself in his work from the second half of the 1930s. Typical features are the rich contrasting colour, dramatic play of light and shadow, energetic brush strokes, and succinctness. He used similar color and dynamic painting techniques in his 1942 painting "Belveder". Dedication on the back: "In a friendly reminder of the war years of April 19, 1945, Jan Bauch." Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Upper left "Jan Bauch 1945"

        CIRCUS – A SET OF 15 PRINTS

        Est: -

“I draw or paint circuses as man’s eternal restless desire to go beyond the bounds of the possible. It is a parable of the restlessness of the human spirit in the field of science and technology, which in modern times is now capable of doing today what was impossible yesterday. But I sense a stronger connection with art. Art is the eternal attempt to go beyond all boundaries, and this courage is the source of beauty.” This set of 15 prints portrays acrobats, female trick riders, cycle and ring performers, horsemen |and clowns, their acts defying the laws of gravity and inaccessible to other mortals. The set includes a manuscript of poems as well as a printed version. In the 20th century, circus themes became a phenomenon that was reflected in various areas of art. Bauch’s oldest picture featuring this motif dates from 1960 he created more in the 1970s, and later he made a set of prints.
