      JOHN T. BATTIN (1805 - ?): BUST OF A GENTLEMAN

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

JOHN T. BATTIN (1805 - ?): BUST OF A GENTLEMAN Carved marble, 1844, incised on the reverse 'J. Battin/Sculptor/N. York/1844'. 32 x 22 x 11 3/4 in. Note: This bust was formerly in situ at the New York Chamber of Commerce, 65 Liberty Street, in the Financial District of New York City. Chartered in 1784 as the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York, the organization was established in 1770 with a royal charter granted by King George III. The Beaux-arts building was built in 1900 to house the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York which occupied it until 1980. The architect Haines Lunberg Waehler restored the building in 1900. Today it is the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. In 2002, The Partnership for New York City Inc. took over the NY Chamber of Commerce's collection. Recognizing its historical significance, The Partnership donated the portrait collection to the New York State Museum in 2003.
