      CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927) The Sharecropper. Silver print, circa 1920. 200x171 mm; 7 7/8x6 3/4 inches, full margins. With the artist's stamp, "C.M. Battey, Tuskegee Inst., Ala., Copyrighted," in the negative, lower right. Battey's range extended beyond standard portrait photography. Once he returned to the South to teach at Tuskegee Institute, he used his camera to capture the everyday lives of African Americans in the early 20th century.

      CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927) W. E. B. Du Bois. Silver print, 1918. 343x260 mm; 13 1/2x10 1/4 inches. With the artist's embossed stamp, "The Photographic Division, C.M. Battey, Instructor, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama," lower left. This is one of the best known images of Du Bois, whom Battey met while living in New York. In 1909, Du Bois helped to found the NAACP and its magazine, The Crisis, which between 1915 and 1927 featured many of Battey's photographs on its covers.

      CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927) Booker T. Washington. Silver print, circa 1908. 235x171 mm; 9 1/4x6 3/4 inches. With the artist's stamp, "C.M. Battey, Tuskegee Inst., Ala., Copyrighted," in the negative, lower right. Washington founded Tuskegee Institute in 1881 as a place to educate African Americans in industrial and mechanical training. He died in 1915, one year before Battey become the head of the institute's first photography department.
