JOAN BATLLE I AMELL (Sitges, 1855-ibidem, 1927). "Marina with fishermen". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It has two losses in the upper right corner. Measurements: 68,5 x 124 cm. Spanish painter, member of the Luminist School of Sitges. Towards 1880 he joined the Luminist School of Sitges, in contact with other artists like Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, Joaquim de Miró, Antoni Almirall and Joan Roig i Soler. In contrast to the Olot School, whose painters treated the landscape of inland Catalonia with a softer, more filtered light, the Sitges artists favoured the warm, vibrant Mediterranean light and the atmospheric effects of the Garraf coast. Heirs to a large extent of Mariano Fortuny, the members of this school sought to faithfully reflect the luminous effects of the surrounding landscape in harmonious compositions that combined verism and a certain poetic and idealised vision of nature, with a subtle chromaticism and a fluid brushstroke that was sometimes described as Impressionist. A disciple to a large extent of Roig i Soler, he focused like the latter on landscape and marine painting, with a style similar to that of his master, whom he nevertheless failed to match in terms of the quality of his drawing, perspective and chromaticism. He took part in the Villanueva y Geltrú Regional Exhibition of 1882, where the group was considered a school of painting for the first time. In 1892 he took part in the First Modernist Exhibition, which was held in Sitges, with the paintings Marina, Campanario de mi pueblo, Alfarería and Calle de San Juan.1 This date marked the end of the more properly luminarist stage of this school, as the rise of incipient modernism led to the gradual dissolution of the group, which was also reflected in Roig i Soler's departure from Sitges to settle in Barcelona. Subsequently, most of these artists evolved in different ways. Batlle continued to a large extent with the Luminist style, although in a more personal and heterogeneous manner. On 30 June 1893, together with other artists, he signed as a witness for the acquisition of the Cau Ferrat estate, later to be used as a museum of Santiago Rusiñol and Catalan Modernisme. He took part in the Barcelona Fine Arts Exhibition of 1894 with the work Un rincón de campo ("A Corner of the Countryside") and in 1898 with Camino de les Forques ("Path of the Forques").
