Maxwell Bennett Bates 1906 - 1980 Canadian oil on canvas The Lonesome Road 36 x 30 inches 91.4 x 76.2 centimeters signed and dated 1970 Literature:Jack Shadbolt, ""Maxwell Bates (1906 - 1980)"", artscanada 37, December 1980 / January 1981, page 2 Patricia E. Bovey, A Passion for Art, The Art and Dynamics of the Limners, 1996, reproduced in a photograph of a scene from Maxwell Bates's seventieth birthday party, page 51 Provenance:Acquired as a wedding present in 1971 from the Artist by the present Private Collection, Scotland This work appears in a photograph of Maxwell Bates's seventieth birthday party at the Victoria home of Robin Skelton, a well-known poet and academic, with the guests dressed as figures from Bates's paintings. It is believed to be a self-portrait, the face an amalgam of dog / sheep / human features, clothing seemingly on backwards, an image consistent with Bates's sense of sardonic humour and use of social satire. The Lonesome Road could refer to his looking back over his struggle as an artist and as a human being - he was a survivor of a German prisoner of war camp and of a stroke in 1961. In a tribute, artist Jack Shadbolt wrote, "He saw the world around him with no illusions but with human tolerance...His was the realism of the compassionate satirist. His technique and vision stemmed from Max Beckmann, with whom he studied and whom he admired unreservedly, but his extensions out of such a beginning were his own and unique." Bates is one of Canada's most important Expressionists, and the Lonesome Road is an outstanding example of his intense and complex portraits.

In 1971, he founded the Limners, an artists' group in Victoria that focused on the human figure and the human condition, subjects important to Bates. His most sought-after works are scenes depicting groups of people in socially charged, stage-like settings such as art openings, cocktail parties and restaurant scenes, as in this fine example set in the iconic Empress Hotel in Victoria. In these scenes, people are together, yet apart, each living out their individual drama, emphasized by the strange figure in the background with the mask-like face who turns to face the viewer. In the foreground at the table is Bates himself - he was quite sociable, and sometimes positioned himself in his tableaus. Brilliant colouration in the green banquette and the reds and blues of clothing adds to the striking effect of the painting. Complex, intense and enigmatic, Bates's tableaus such as Garden Cafe at Empress Hotel are rich and compelling.

Maxwell Bennett Bates 1906 - 1980 Canadian oil on board Street Scene 48 x 30 inches 121.9 x 76.2 centimeters signed and dated 1968 and on verso signed, titled and inscribed ""931 Lakeview Ave., Victoria, BC"" on the frame Provenance:Private Collection, Toronto Maxwell Bates studied Abstract Expressionism with Max Beckmann in New York. This left an indelible mark on Bates's work, most strongly in terms of colour and composition. Bates was also affected by his experiences as a prisoner of war in Germany; his stark drawings from that time are an insightful window on the human condition. In his figurative work, he is deftly able to give us a sense of the character of his subjects in the glance of their eyes, the set of their lips, their posture and the colour of their skin. His placement of them in relation to one another is key to their particular story. Street Scene shows us a man with a world-weary face, a working class woman and a smaller, upward-glancing figure who stuffs something - perhaps money - into his pocket. The man and woman face us, his heavily lidded eyes direct in their gaze. This moment on a street corner is a classic example of Bates's interest in the human condition, the relationships between social classes and the relationships of everyday people with each another.
