How grey at once is the evening grown; oil on canvas laid down on panel, of irregular shape, signed and dated 83, 26x19.5cm Note: the title of this work is quoted from Robert Browning's By the Fireside, stanza XXXVII. This work is by H. Francis Bate, who studied at the Royal College of Art and the Antwerp Academy. It is typical of Bate's light-suffused depictions of nature, other examples of which are currently held in the University of Hull Art Collection and Reading Museum and Town Hall.
