Frederick Batcheller Strawberry Basket Painting

Rhode Island 1837-1889 Depicts a basket over flowing with strawberries framed by leaves glistening in sunlight. Batcheller started his career as an apprentice to the Tingley Brothers carving marble before switching to painting around 1855. Batcheller was one of the founders of the Providence Art Club and exhibited his work alongside Stetson, Bannister, Whitaker, and Lewin.

Frederick Batcheller began his art career as a marble cutter in Providence, Rhode Island for the well-known firm of Tingley Brothers. 19th Century Oil on Canvas Floral Still Life. Signed lower left "Batcheller'. Frederick Stone Batcheller, 1837-1889, was active/lived in Rhode Island. A painter of still life's, landscape, and portraits, and a sculptor of portrait busts who carved in marble. Frederick Batcheller was from Providence, Rhode Island. He apprenticed with the Tingley Brothers who were marble carvers and began his career with that medium, but from 1855 focused on oil painting and became especially noted for fruit still life's. Image size 11-1/2" x 9-1/2", in the original gilt molded frame, 17-1/2" x 15-1/2" overall. Condition: Very good with minor wear.

Frederick Stone Batcheller (American (Rhode Island), 1837-1889), "New England River Landscape"-1882, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Well rendered landscape painting depicting a view of a serpentine river and forested banks with still placid water under overcast cloudy sky as rainstorm approaches. Framed approximately 28.5" x 40.5". Unframed approximately 24.25" x 36". Note: Frederick Stone Batcheller was active with the Providence art community and worked with noted artists Marcus Waterman and James Morgan Lewin,as a member of "The Group of 1855". He began his career working as a marble cutter and sculptor in Providence, Rhode Island for Tingley Brothers stone yard. He later turned his attention to painting still life and landscape paintings for which he is most highly regarded. In 1880, Batcheller and other artists founded the Providence Art Club in order to further the Rhode Island art movement and connect artists with other artists and reach out to new and enthusiastic seasoned collectors. This work displays Batcheller's keen and skilled attention to detail, texture and weight typically found in his still life paintings while capturing a fleeting moment in the New England landscape--the calm before the storm.
