Bassi was known throughout Europe during his lifetime as an exceptional landscapist. He trained at the academy in Bologna, and later traveled to Rome where he completed his studies and adopted landscape as his primary genre. The cataloguing of the present lot follows the extensive research and connoisseurship undertaken by the Shepherd Gallery, New York, as published in the catalogue to its 1976 exhibition Italian 19th Century Drawings and Watercolors: An Album.     (Massa Lombarda, 1784 - Roma, 1852) Veduta di Ariccia Firmato in basso a destra Formatosi a Bologna e trasferitosi a Roma nel 1810 con l’amico Tommaso Minardi, Giambattista Bassi fu un esponente di primo piano del paesaggismo italiano della sua epoca. Amico di Canova, di Thorvaldsen e di Camuccini, il pittore espresse seguendo la tradizione paesistica bolognese e le istanze neoclassiche una visione della campagna romana cogliendone gli aspetti naturalistici e atmosferici con straordinario talento. Nella sua produzione si avvertono altresì i dettami sulla pittura di Pierre-henri de Valenciennes, che gli consentirono di rinnovare il gusto arcadico e di far propri alcuni spunti del pittoresco romantico. Tutti questi elementi sono ravvisabili nella veduta in esame, che descrive la cittadina di Ariccia con il Palazzo Chigi e la Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta avvolte in una atmosfera dorata, nel quale viene posta molta cura nella resa atmosferica e i contrasti di luminosità. Sappiamo che Bassi lavorò a Ariccia in numerose occasioni e, negli anni Trenta, anche in compagnia di Massimo d'Azeglio (che lo considerava un maestro) documentato nel paese laziale nel 1835.
