Francesco Bassano the Younger, Bassano del Grappa 1549 - 1592 Venice, Market in Venice

        Est: €8,000 - €16,000

Francesco Bassano the Younger Bassano del Grappa 1549 - 1592 Venice Attributed Market in Venice during Carnival Oil on original canvas 140.5 x 185.5 cm, with frame 182.5 x 207.5 cm Signed lower right Francesco Bassano the Younger was an Italian painter from the famous Bassano family of artists. He was born in Bassano del Grappa and was the eldest son of Jacopo Bassano, a leading figure of the Venetian Renaissance. Francesco was trained in his father's workshop, where he developed his painting skills and adopted his father's penchant for vivid colours and dynamic compositions. The Bassano family was known for their innovative approach to genre scenes and their masterful use of light and shadow, which Francesco skilfully continued. Francesco's works are characterised by their vibrant energy and meticulous attention to detail. He frequently depicted religious subjects, pastoral scenes and lively market scenes, capturing the essence of everyday life with a keen observational eye. His paintings reflect a seamless blend of his father's influence and his own unique style, making him a significant figure of the late Renaissance. This painting captures the bustling and chaotic atmosphere of a market in Venice during the carnival season. The detailed composition reflects the lively atmosphere of the Venetian carnival. In the right foreground, a food vendor is busy attending to her customers, offering the viewer a grounded point of entry. The range of goods on offer immediately attracts the viewer's attention and sets the energetic tone of the scene. In the centre foreground, a masked woman accompanied by a musician and a servant with a dog strides to the left. The masked woman, symbolising the carnival, lends the scene an air of mystery and festivity. The musician and the servant with their respective instruments and pets also contribute to the lively and varied character of the scene. From the left, a bearded man is seen running to the right, possibly in pursuit of something or someone, adding a sense of urgency and movement to the painting. This dynamically gesticulating figure contrasts with the calmly striding lady. In the background, the square is filled with people going about their various activities. The windows of the houses are also full of onlookers, emphasising the communal nature of the event. An ox appears in the midst of the crowd, symbolising the diversity of the market and the mingling of the different facets of life. The bright colours of the figures' clothing, especially the vibrant reds, stand out against the dark blue cloudy sky and the darker tones of the architecture and ground. This contrast creates a dramatic visual effect that emphasises the festive and somewhat disorderly character of the scene. The viewer is drawn into the vibrant life and festivities.

Francesco BASSANO Bassano del Grappa, 1549 - Venise, 1592 L'annonce aux bergers Ardoise The Annunciation to the shepherds, slate, by Fr. Francesco da Ponte Bassano (Bassano del Grappa, Veneto, 1549 - Venice, 1592) "Birth of the Virgin Mary" Oil on canvas. Signed. 91 x 126 cm. The Nativity of Mary is an iconography that was drawn together in several apocryphal gospels, including the Gospel of James.  Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, not having had children in the marriage, promise to consecrate the child that is granted to them to God, and for that purpose, Saint Joachim goes to the temple to make an offering. After being rejected by the priest, he withdraws to meditate until an angel tells him and his wife that he will father a daughter, who would in turn be the Mother of the Son of God. On the canvas you can see Saint Anne lying on the bed, attended by several women. One of them offers her a tray with eggs so that she can recover the strength lost in childbirth, while a servant holds the baby Mary and prepares her for a bath in a basin and several women prepare bandages and towels. A servant kneels as a sign of respect before her. Saint Joachim is depicted in the scene, next to Saint Anne, despite this being uncommon.  The interior of the house is sumptuous, with decorative elements and high quality furniture, marble columns, curtains and pitchers, among other elements. Francesco Bassano, known in Spain as "Bassano el Mozo" was a renowned Italian painter who worked in Venice, Florence and Rome and who belonged to a family of painters. As can be read in the Prado Museum encyclopedia , "he was the eldest son of the founder of this dynasty of artists [Jacopo Bassano], as well as the most gifted of the four brothers, all painters, who formed the Bassanesque workshop." His paintings were highly valued in the Spanish court of King Philip II and during the 17th century, which is why the Prado Museum has numerous works by the Bassanos. The Prado also reports that his outstanding paintings include "the seven canvases preserved from the series of «The months of the year», which are now entirely attributed to Francesco and had not been studied by specialists until recently." Old Masters, Leandro Bassano (1557–1622) Baptism of Saint Lucilla

        Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Leandro Bassano, the fourth son of the great Jacopo Bassano, who worked in his father´s worshop, inherited his father´s style and continued to develop a more realistic interpretation of pastoral and bucolic themes through a chromatic system with a vivid stamp. Saint Valentino baptizes Saint Lucilla, richly dressed against the background of a city. In heaven, two putti hold a palm branch, which is usually a sign of victory for martyrs who gained eternal life with their death by faith. Expert opinion Dr. Dario Succi.

DER HEILIGE HIERONYMUS Öl auf Leinwand. 54,5 x 60 cm. (1210345) (13)

Oil on canvas. Francesco Bassano the Younger, nicknamed Francesco Giambattista da Ponte came from a family of painters. His father Jacopo Bassano was his first teacher. Among his most significant works are part of the decoration of the Doges’ Palace in Venice. Jerome was a Christian writer, theologian, and translator of the Bible. The Catholic Church considers him, along with Sts. Ambrose, Augustine and Gregory the Great, to be one of the four western Fathers of the Church. He was probably the most talented expert in languages in the Christian world during the 4th and 5th centuries, and was only one of the Fathers of the Church who spoke and wrote Hebrew perfectly. The painting shows him studying of the Holy Scriptures. The scene is executed in earthy tones with an emphasis on his distinctive characteristic red cloak, because according to tradition, Jerome was a Cardinal.

ALLTAG AUF DEM LAND Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 130 x 175 cm. Gerahmt. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Alexander Kemeny, Bratislava, 17. Oktober 2014. Rest. (1030181) Francesco Bassano and Bassano School, 1549 - 1592 EVERYDAY COUNTRY LIFE Oil on canvas. Relined. 130 x 175 cm. Framed. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Alexander Kemeny, Bratislava, 17 October 2014. The landscape-format painting shows a wide hilly landscape. The foreground is dominated by a young woman, viewed from the rear and milking a goat, and a shepherdess shearing a sheep. A hut in which cheese is produced can be seen in the left middle ground of the painting. Jacopo Bassano, Francesco’s father, became famous in the 16th century for his combination of bucolic scenes and biblical subjects and became so successful that his image motifs were taken up and modified again and again by a large workshop and school. The present painting shows a subject reduced to the genre of everyday life, beautifully depicting the different tasks of the country folk. The iconography of the painting correlates with the month of April. The present painting could therefore have been part of a large annual cycle of all the months.
