    Peter Basch (German-born American, 1921-2004), abstract nude, gelatin silver print, ca. 1950s to 1960s. Signed in pencil on verso. Basch's red studio stamp on verso as well. A black and white photograph of a nude female, her body cut off at the right of the composition to create an abstract interpretation modeled further by strong light and shadow effects. Peter Basch was a magazine photographer for more than 20 years. His photographs of "glamour girls", starlets, dancers, artists, actors, and celebrities appeared in magazines such as Life, Playboy, and Look. Size: 8.125" W x 8.625" H (20.6 cm x 21.9 cm) Born to German Jews, Basch's family came to New York in 1933 as anti-Jewish sentiment was on the rise. They opened a restaurant on Central Park South in the Navarro Hotel that became a favorite haunt for the expatriate community. After serving in the Army, Basch attended UCLA and later went on to have a very successful career as a photographer. New York, ca 1970.   11 x 14 in. silver gelatin photograph (edge and corner wear, including creasing to top right and bottom right corners). Verso with penciled identification, "Makeba," and ink stamp, "Peter Basch Studios Inc."  Miriam Makeba, aka Mama Africa, was a singer, actress, and later United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Her music was influenced by jazz, ragtime, hymns, and music indigenous to South Africa.  Peter Basch was a magazine and glamour photographer whose career was prominent during the 1950s and 1960s. He was best known for his images of celebrities, artists, dancers, actors, and glamourous women in America and abroad. Basch's photographs appeared in high profile magazines including Life, Look, and Playboy. This lot is located in Cincinnati.
