ALFRED BASBOUS (LEBANESE 1924-2006) ALFRED BASBOUS (LEBANESE 1924-2006) Mother and Child 1988 signed and dated A. Basbous 88; numbered 1/8 (lower left) bronze (black and blue patina) 71 x 17.5 x 18 cm (28 x 6 3/4 x 7 in) PROVENANCE Private collection, Beirut Renowned sculptor Alfred Basbous worked almost exclusivly in stone and marble, rendering his work from a solid block with a hammer and chisel, allowing the natural form to inspire his mostly abstract shapes. He excelled at creating fluidity, and exploited negative space to give his sculptures a sense of motion. The female figure dominantes; having intially catered to an audience who preferred realism, Basbous developed his signature silouette. This streamlined the female outlines to its most basic elements, whilst retaining the fundamental curves. The woman, in Alfred’s work, means birth with all its comprehensive human meanings. According to Alfred Basbous: “A woman means the night and the day to me, and she is present in all of my work: a woman, a lover, a mother.”

When the calamity of time affects one limb The other limbs cannot remain at rest" – SaadiTHE HUMAN FAMILYAlred Basbous striking quadrangular figure of an allegorical family is a powerfully symbolic sculpture exhibiting all the hallmarks of the renowned Lebanese artists virtuoso flair. Depicting a soldier, a labourer, a child and a mother with hands proudly and tenderly interlocked, Basbous presents us with a symbolic depiction of the family of mankind, and the complementary qualities each character contributes to the general wellbeing and unity of societyAlfred Basbous was born in Rachana, Lebanon in 1924. His first exhibition in Beirut, at the Alecco Saab gallery in 1958, marked the beginning of his long and successful career as a sculptor. Basbous's works express a lifelong exploration of the human form and its abstract properties. Focused on the aesthetic principles of shape, movement, line and material, his sculptures display a deeply ingrained sincerity and a search for the essence of beauty. Working in the tradition of sculptors such as Auguste Rodin, Jean Arp and Henry Moore, Alfred Basbous explores the potential of noble materials such as bronze, wood and marble to express the sensuality and purity of the human form. This aversion towards frivolous and meaningless embellishments echoes his own philosophy of simplicity and earnestness.

ALFRED BASBOUS (Rachana/Lebanon 1924 - 2006 Beirut) Le voilier. 1966. Lebanian stone (limestone). With the incised signature and date: A. Basbous 66. Height 47 cm. Professionally restored. With the confirmation of authenticity by the artist in 2004. Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist by the present owner, since then private collection Switzerland. Alfred Babous is one of the most well-known Lebanese sculptors of the 20th century. He is the middle son of three brothers, who in the progressive Lebanon of the 1970s created a bridge between traditional sculpture and modern forms of expression. They have thus made a significant contribution to the hitherto little recognised modern sculpture of the Near East. Initially employed as a stone cutter for the British Railway, Alfred Babous succeeded in combining his trade with an artistic expression, which by the end of the 1950s led to national and, shortly afterwards, to international recognition. In 1960 Alfred Babous received a bursary from the French government to attend L'École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where, the following year, his first international exhibition took place. At the same time the Musée Rodin in Paris showed Alfred Babous’ sculptures as part of the “International Sculpture Exhibition”. In subsequent years the influence of Western sculpture became clearly noticeable in his work. Thus, Henry Moore’s organic forms imprinted on the work of Alfred Babous, whose sculptures flow with a seductive surface texture. Conceptual triggers, such as those from Constantin Brancusi are also noticeable in his oeuvre. The sculpture offered here at auction “Le voilier” is a fine example of this: as Brancusi with his “Bird in Space” from 1923, did not show the bird itself but rather depicted its soaring flight, so “Le voilier” by Alfred Babous shows not so much the sail as the wind which fills the sail. It is the depiction of an event, which eludes the representational and becomes a metaphorical image of power and freedom. Paradoxically, the sculptural image succeeds in capturing an intangible phenomenon, in particular through the Lebanese limestone, which reflects the impact of the movement in its solid material. Material, concept and form fit together in Alfred Babous’ oeuvre to create a progressive total picture, which is probably most fittingly described with a quote from Henry Moore: “Monumentality doesn’t have to do with scale, it’s the vision behind the work, which holds its true magnitude” . --------------- ALFRED BASBOUS (Rachana/Libanon 1924 - 2006 Beirut) Le voilier. 1966.
