Basan sculp.". Date: c. 1770 Description: Portrait medallion of King Edward VI of England. Person: King Eduard VI., England Tudor (1537 Hampton Court Palace - 1553 Greenwich) Edward was the first English king to receive a Protestant education. His reign was marked by religious reforms that for the first time set the Anglican Church on a course that was close to the Protestant confession in terms of content. His father, Henry VIII, had detached the English Church from Rome, but had largely maintained Catholic church doctrine. Under Edward, services in English became obligatory, the Holy Mass was banned, celibacy for priests was abolished and the Book of Common Prayer was introduced, which is still used today in a modified form. The architect of the reforms was Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. Edward's reign was at the same time plagued by economic problems and rebellions (1549); a costly war with Scotland also ended in military retreat. After Edward became deathly ill in February 1553, he and his council tried to prevent England's return to Catholicism by changing the succession to the throne. His half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth were excluded from the succession and his cousin Jane Grey was named as heir instead. However, Jane was deposed after only nine days and the throne was ascended by Mary, who reversed Edward's Protestant reforms.         Le Peintre. Kupferstich und Radierung nach Louis Aubert. 29,4 x 22,3 cm. "F. Basan Exc." Le Blanc 394, IFF 39. -- -- Pierre-François Basan wirkte selbst als Kupferstecher und Radierer, ist heute jedoch primär als erfolgreicher Verleger von europäischer Druckgraphik bekannt. In seinem Verlagshaus beschäftigte er eine große Zahl talentierter junger Stecher, deren Namen jedoch auf vielen der Abzüge aus dem Verlagshaus Basans fehlen. Auch der vorliegende, mit größter Sorgfalt ausgeführte Kupferstich mit der Darstellung eines Malers und seines jungen Gehilfen trägt zwar die Verlagsadresse Basans, der Name des Stechers jedoch wird nicht genannt. Die Komposition basiert auf einer wohl in Pastell ausgeführten Zeichnung vom Pariser Maler und Zeichner Louis Aubert (1720 - ca. 1790), deren Verbleib heute unbekannt ist. Eine sehr ähnliche, auf 1747 datierte Zeichnung des Künstlers befindet sich heute in der Albertina, Wien (Inv. Nr. 12241; zu Louis Aubert vgl. Neil Jeffares, "Louis Aubert", in: Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, London 2006). Die dem Kupferstich beigegebene Bildunterschrift verrät, dass die vorbildhafte Zeichnung sich einst in der Sammlung des Monsieur de Damery, Ritter des Königlichen Ordens von St. Louis und Oberstleutnant der Infanterie in Paris befand. Das seltene Blatt in einem ausgezeichneten Druck mit schmalem, unten mit feinem Rändchen um die deutlich zeichnende Plattenkante.         [BASAN, PIERRE-FRANÇOIS] COLLECTION DE 120 ESTAMPES GRAVÉES D'APRÈS LES TABLEAUX ET DESSINS QUI COMPOSAIENT LE CABINET DE M. POULLAIN. PARIS, BASAN ET POIGNANT, 1781. In-4 (300 x 220 mm). Exemplaire du second tirage avec, au titre, la mention « dédié à M. le Comte d'Orsay ». illustration : une vignette au 2ème feuillet non chiffré et 120 planches d'après Rubens, Véronèse, Breughels, Le Moine... Une planche contient les gravures 20 et 61. La gravure 51 est double. reliure signée de hardy. Maroquin rouge, plats et dos ornés. La date au dos "1791" est erronée. Feuillets de titre et d'avertissement légèrement roussis.
