    • Attributed to Marco Basaiti (Venice, circa 1475-1530) Portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, in black jacket
      Sep. 17, 2015

Attributed to Marco Basaiti (Venice, circa 1475-1530) Portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, in black jacket

      Est: £10,000 - £20,000

Attributed to Marco Basaiti (Venice, circa 1475-1530) Portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, in black jacket egg tempera and oil on a spoke-shaved poplar panel h:42 w:30 cm Provenance: Presumably the Portland collection, Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, and by descent to the Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck sale, Christie's, London, 28 March 1947, lot 11, as "Florentine School", where bought by Frank Sabin for 600 guineas. Some time thereafter acquired by the present owner. The suggested attribution is due to Professor Mauro Lucco. This little portrait of a young man has a distinct Antonellesque character: the sitter is seen three-quarters behind a ledge, wearing a black Venetian toga and a black cap, and his hair is shoulder-length. The present portrait can be compared with the "Portrait of a Boy" in the National Gallery, London, and "Portrait of a Young Man", thought to be Alvide de Franceschi, recently sold at Sotheby's New York, 27 January 2011, lot 102.
