      • Barwig, Franz: Springendes Zicklein
        May. 30, 2015

        Barwig, Franz: Springendes Zicklein

        Est: €800 - €1,200

Franz Barwig Senior, Bronze, Adam, c. 1910

        Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Bronze with dark brown patina Austria, Vienna, circa 1910 Franz Barwig, the Elder (1868-1931) - Austrian sculptor On the front of the plinth engraved with the artist's monogram 'FB' On the back with the foundry mark 'Erzgiesserei AG Vienna' Beautiful representation of Adam in contrapposto position, influenced by the Greek antiquity Height: 73 cm Very good condition Franz Barwigs works were early exhibited internationally and purchased by major museums in Europe, this sculpture is a fine example of combining tradition and modernity This bronze sculpture was designed by the sculptor Franz Barwig the Elder, who is considered one of the most important and successful Austrian sculptors of his time. It was created around 1910 and depicts the figure of Adam as God created him, holding an apple in his hands. The artist presents here the biblical figure of Adam like a naked young man in contrapposto position with defined muscles, who holds an apple with both hands in front of his chest. His eyes are lost in reverie and reinforce the emotional content, which was an important means of expression in modern sculpture. Characteristic of the work Barwigs is the combination of classical ideals with the current style of modern art as it is expressed here. In addition to that he also created a sculpture of Eve that appears to be a little smaller with a size of 37 cm. Further reference should be the exhibition at the Belvedere scheduled for May 2014, called 'Meisterwerke im Fokus' ('Masterpieces in Focus'), in which the oeuvre of the artist Franz Barwig the Elder is to be presented extensively. The bronze bears the engraved artist's monogram 'FB' on the plinth and is stamped on the reverse with the foundry mark 'Erzgiesserei AG Vienna'. It is in very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. Its total height is 73 cm. Franz Barwig der Ältere (1868-1931) Franz Barwig the Elder was born 1931 in Schönau.
