William Henry Bartlett ROI RBC (1858 -1932) Digging for Clams, Connemara Oil on canvas 77 x 127cm (30¼ x 50) Signed and dated 1881 William Henry Bartlett (1858 – 1932) was born on the Isle of Wight, the son of an art dealer, John Searle Bartlett and received his artistic education over the course of the mid-1870s at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Académie Julian, under Bouguereau. It is likely that Bartlett met some of the young Irish artists also studying in Paris at that time but it is thought that it was an American artist, Howard Helmick, living at the time near Galway, who introduced him to Ireland in the late 1870s. Amongst his earliest paintings in Ireland are scenes of the everyday lives, activities and costume of the people of Connemara and Achill, subjects he relished in portraying, as William Laffan noted with ‘an almost ethnographic approach’. His interest as a painter was primarily in the occupations of the locals, the fishing, the gathering of wrack, and the ferrying of cattle to and from the markets and fairs, and in the present work from 1881, two boys digging for clams. While his West of Ireland sea and landscapes are confidently and fluently painted, it is his representation of the activities of the inhabitants that set William Bartlett apart from many of his peers. By the turn of the century, he had discovered Donegal and indeed acquired a cottage on Inis Mhic an Doirn (Rutland Island), a coastal island located between the town of Burtonport and the island of Arranmore. Bartlett exhibited a Donegal scene at the 1906 Paris Salon and a year later showed Storm Bound in the Rosses at the Irish International Exhibition. A reviewer in the Irish Times described the artist as being ‘ illustrative of the spirit in which the modern landscape painter approaches his subject’. The review continues ‘ Here is a scene absolutely true to nature, one which is instinct with the genius loci, as those who have travelled in the North-West of Donegal will freely acknowledge’.

Bartlett studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he entered the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904) and also, from 1875-77, at the Académie Julian under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French 1825-1905), but, with long lasting influence on his art, like so many British and Irish painters of his generation, he came under the spell of the pleinairism of Jules Bastien-Lepage (French, 1848-1884). Bartlett attained compositional and technical facility in his years in Paris before returning to London in 1880. That year, his first Royal Academy (RA) exhibits included views of the Forest of Fontainebleau, however, in addition to painting at the font of French Naturalism, already by this date he was engaging with Irish subject matter. Bartlett's introduction to Ireland came, in about 1878, through an American artist 'then living just outside Galway' (Bartlett, 'The West Coast of Ireland', p. 120). This was Howard Helmick (American, 1845-1907) who had shared his Parisian education. Among the earliest of his Irish works, painted when he was just over twenty, On the Beach, Connemara, 1878 (Private collection) reveals the artist's early fluency. Bartlett based himself 'for several seasons' at Renvyle, in the hotel run from their ancestral home by the Blake family. He also worked on Achill and, further north, in Donegal, acquiring a cottage on Rutland Island. Almost all of Bartlett's Irish works feature the sea which at times - as in Fishing off the West Coast - suggests a certain contiguity with the contemporaneous productions of Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910). In an 1894 article for the Art Journal, Bartlett described the attractions of the West of Ireland: the physical scenery, the atmospheric effects to be sampled ('luminous grey days') and the picturesque clothing and behaviour of the inhabitants (W. H. Bartlett, 'Coast Life In Connemara', p. 247). He describes several of the activities which he was to paint, for example the transport of livestock from the islands to the mainland - the subject, of his 1887 canvas Off to the Fair, Connemara (private collection). The following year he exhibited the Seal Diver: County Mayo at the RA, again a subject he was to describe in the Art Journal. Expressing regret that 'shop-made shawls are unfortunately coming more and more into general use', Bartlett was keenly attuned to local colour and has at times an almost ethnographic approach to his subject matter. His links with Ireland continued well into the twentieth century - he exhibited a Donegal scene at the Paris Salon in 1906. His square-brush, naturalist style was recognised at the time as bringing something new to the depiction of the Irish landscape. A review of the 1907 Irish International Exhibition, for example, describes him as 'more modern in type' and his Storm Bound in the Rosses as being 'illustrative of the spirit in which the modern landscape painter approaches his subject'. The review continues: 'Here is a scene absolutely true to nature, one which is instinct with the genius loci, as those who have travelled in the North-West of Donegal will freely acknowledge' (Irish Times May 16 1907). Indeed, Bartlett forms an important link between the essentially Victorian, and often sentimental, paintings of other visiting artists, such as Helmick or Francis William Topham and the figurative work of Paul Henry in his years on Achill. Bartlett continued his links with France - he was awarded a silver medal at the Paris exhibition of 1889 and held a one-man show at the Fine Art Society, 'The Basse Seine' - and though particularly captivated by the West of Ireland, he also worked in St Ives, attracted by its 'old world charm'. His Cornish paintings betray more stylistic eclecticism than the generally homogenous body of work produced in Ireland with The First Sprats of the Season, recalling Stanhope Forbes and Practicing for the Swimming Match echoing Henry Scott Tuke - both artists were his associates in the New English Art Club (illustrated W.H. Bartlett, 'Summer Time at St. Ives, Cornwall', Art Journal, 1897, pp. 292-95). Together with the stylistically related, Off to the Fair, the present work, Wrack for the Farm was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1887, the year of its completion. In his written description of life in the West, Bartlett himself gave a vivid account of the significance to the local economy of the scene he depicts. Seaweed or 'wrack', as it is called, plays an important part in Connemara life, both in the form of manure for the land and burnt for kelp. A most picturesque scene is after a storm in the spring, when all the available population make their way to the shore with their horses and donkeys and baskets of all sorts and sizes. Into the sea they will go, gathering wrack of every kind, torn up by the rough Atlantic. It is an animated scene, and all appear to enjoy the work, joking and laughing with one another. By contrast to this remembered image of collective endeavour, here Bartlett shows the arduous nature of subsistence farming, as, set in a beautifully rendered western landscape, a family unit toils together. Bartlett was not alone in portraying the collection of seaweed on the beach. It was a subject also treated by Aloysius O'Kelly and it is likely that the two artists knew each other - O'Kelly had preceded Bartlett by two years in entering Gérôme's studio, also studying with Bouguereau. Samuel Lover and Ernest Waterlow also painted the gathering of seaweed, while Jack Yeats in his illustrations for John Millington Synge's articles on life in the West recorded its harvesting and later made it the subject of Thraw Bawn (1920), showing a young girl carrying a creel basket full of wrack. However, Bartlett arguably transcends these essentially anecdotal variations on the theme to approach closer to the - paradoxical - achievement of the great French Naturalists, notably Jean François Millet, of imbuing humble figures engaged in quotidian labour with emblematic resonance and even quasi-spiritual significance. William Laffan We are also grateful to Prof Kenneth McConkey for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.

(1858 London - 1932 ebenda) "A bad wind for fish, but a good one for drying" (Ein schlechter Wind zum Fischen, aber ein guter Tag zum Trocknen). Information about the above William Henry Bartlett is extremely hard to come by, owing in part to the existence of the more famous English painter and illustrator William Henry Bartlett (1800-1854), who also sketched and painted in Ireland and America, although only six of his paintings were exhibited at London galleries during his lifetime. Most of the latter's drawings were engraved and used as book illustrations.

        Jul. 19, 2022

        William Henry Bartlett,

        Est: £4,000 - £6,000

William Henry Bartlett, Irish 1858-1932- Hot Soup by the Church of Saint-Eustache, Paris; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'W. H. Bartlett / 1880' (lower right), 72.5 x 90.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Bartlett studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). Over time, he developed his own style which set him apart from his teacher, and which betrays greater affinities to the more Naturalist approach of Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884). The subject of the present work in particular suggest the influence of Bastien-Lepage, as does the palette of muted shades of grey and brown, here contrasted with hints of colour from the figures’ clothing. This picture in fact represents a departure from the artist’s more typical depictions of figures in open, rural, or coastal landscapes, with him here concentrating on urban, Parisian subjects, and taking pains to closely and sympathetically capture each individual. The Church of Saint-Eustache represents a striking, and rather austere, backdrop for the scene’s foreground activity. It is situated in the 1st arrondissement of Paris and the present building was built between 1532 and 1632. It is captured, also, in the oil by Léon Augustin Lhermitte (1844–1925), entitled ‘Les Halles’, painted in 1893, and today held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Paris [no. PPP143]. We are grateful to Professor Kenneth McConkey for his identification of the church in the present work. Please refer to department for condition report

WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (BRITISH 1858-1932) Property from a Private Collection WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (BRITISH 1858-1932) Off to the Fair, Connemara signed and dated W.H.BARTLETT.1887 (lower right) oil on canvas 50.8 x 76.4 cm (20 x 30 in) PROVENANCE: Sale, Christie's, London, 8 November 1996, lot 147 Private Collection By descent from the above to the present owner in 2006 The son of an art dealer, William Henry Bartlett was only seventeen when he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and in the studio of Gérôme at the École des Beaux Arts. Shortly after completing his studies, Bartlett visited the West of Ireland in 1878 and over the next 10 years or so he made regular Summer visits there. Bartlett based himself in Roundstone, and also painted in Renvyle, in County Mayo, and later in County Donegal. Bartlett was fascinated by the coastal landscape of the West of Ireland and the lives of the people who lived there. He painted a series of large canvases of people fishing, hunting seals, attending a funeral, gathering seaweed or returning from a fair. The present work depicts a rowing boat transporting cattle, about to leave a rocky cove in Connemara to head to the fair. Five men and women are labouring to push the boat off. Each person is involved in a different activity, holding the cattle down, providing balance with a long oar or steadying the boat. Off to the Fair, Connemara is typical of the works from Bartlett's West Ireland series; there is a documentary and naturalistic quality to the painting. Bartlett has skillfully captured the summer light, with the men, women and children set against the shimmering water.

During the 1890s, he passed several summers in Connemara, County Galway drawing inspiration from the local inhabitants and rugged scenery. He completed a large number of paintings on Irish rural life and its landscape. Some of these artworks were published in The Art Journal. Bartlett painted in watercolours and exhibited at numerous Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) exhibitions. However, few records remain of any solo shows apart from an undated "Irish Landscape Exhibition" and one at the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork. He was also an accomplished draughtsman, drawing in pencil, pen and ink and chalks. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Public collections of Bartlett's paintings are rare, as are sales of his paintings. He can be seen in Ireland at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery in Cork.

William Henry Bartlett (1858-1932) A Carrageen Moss Gatherer (1910)

        Est: €10,000 - €15,000

William Henry Bartlett (1858-1932) A Carrageen Moss Gatherer (1910) oil on canvas signed lower right and dated '10 h:71  w:48 cm. Provenance: Artist's label verso; Royal Academy 1910, Bradley & Co. London Agents (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Royal Academy 1910 Dressed in a long blue skirt and apron around her waist, a young woman clambers across rocks by the seashore, collecting 'Carrageen Moss'. Rich in natural gelatin and iodine, this seaweed is still much sought-after today. In the past it was used for medical purposes, but today is mainly used for cooking. The woman, carrying a large wicker basket, is silhouetted against the bright silvery-green sea. In the distance is a sandy beach and cottages, with blue hills in the background. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1910, this view in this painting may well be based in Co. Donegal rather than Connemara, as it bears a label on the reverse giving the title, and the artist's address as 'Rutland Island, Burtonport, Co. Donegal', at which location he painted many watercolours and oils. Although an English artist, from Ventor on the Isle of Wight, William Henry Bartlett was one of the first artists to base his subject-matter almost exclusively on the people and landscapes of Connemara. In Paris in the late 1870's, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian, learning the French Realist technique of painting in the open air. His paintings of Connemara generally depict coastal scenes, often with seaweed gatherers, fishermen and open fishing boats. Having been introduced to the West of Ireland around 1878, probably by the American artist Howard Helmick, who also studied in Paris, Bartlett based himself at Renvyle and made painting expeditions in Connemara. He also worked on Achill Island and in Co. Donegal. While his written descriptions of Connemara can incline towards stereotypes, referring to his admiration of 'picturesque' costumes, his paintings are admirable essays in Realism, echoing the style and subject matter of Winslow Homer. There is a strong anthropological vein in Bartlett's art, with many of his paintings depicting everyday subjects such as loading turf, funerals, seal hunting, gathering kelp and cleaning nets. He was more inclined to depict clinker-built wooden rowing boats, rather than the traditional canvas-covered currachs, and his depictions of the people of Connemara are honest and straightforward. Although travelling regularly to the West of Ireland, Bartlett remained based in England, and in 1886 was one of the founders of the New English Art Club. He also made painting trips to St. Ives, and, maintaining his links with France, in 1889 was awarded a silver medal at the Paris exhibition. Peter Murray, October 2020

His numerous Irish scenes concentrate primarily on the lives and activities of fisherfolk on the western coast, such as gathering kelp; unloading turf; and farmers moving stock, of which the present work is a fine example.
