BRUYN D.J., BARTHOLOMÄUS Cologne ca. 1530 - 1607/ 10 - workshop Triptych with Cologne Donor's Portraits. Centrally on the Depiction the Lamentation of Christ. On the two Wings Depictions of the Donors with their Emblems and their Biographical Data on the Frame. Left wing: "OBYT ANNO 1567 DIE 24 MARTY AETA 60" as well as "OBYT ANNO 1554 DIE APRILIS 60". Monogram next to the emblem: PVM (alloyed). Right wing: "ANNO 1572 AETATIS SVE 46". Central part: 55 x 61,5 cm Wings each 55 x 26 cm. Oil on wood. Framed. Provenance: Private collection Cologne since the 1950s. The two donors depicted on the wings are members of the Cologne family von Merrem/ Merheim, as our consigner learnt from a letter from the Cologne Stadtmuseum from the year 2000. According to this Thomas von Merren (died 1554), Cologne council man and judge, is depicted on the left; behind him are Peter von Monheim (with monogram PVM, died 1567) together with his son. The person depicted on the right is Anna von Niel (died 1576). She was in her first marriage married to Thomas von Merren and after his death to Peter von Monheim. From this marriage resulted also the depicted boy. For the history of the city of Cologne it is very interesting that Anna von Niel, who is also labelled the "Rentmeistersche in der Mühlengasse" ("Stewardship in the Mühlengasse"), was nearly married to Hermann von Weinsberg. His autobiographie and housebook, the "Book Weinsberg", is the most important source for the history and daily life of the 16th century, not only in Cologne. The depiction on the central panel goes back to a woodback by Albrecht Dürer from 1511.
