This beautiful illustration is from George Barbier's Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Theatre. The work was published in Paris by Bloch and Meynial in 1927 and limited to 275 in publication. Each lithograph featured fantastic theatrical costume designs. Four prints from: This remarkable pochoir fashion print is from Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costumes Parisiens. The work was published between 1912 and 1914 with only 1,279 copies printed in total. Leading artists of the time contributed to the Journal including Barbier, Brunelleschii, Bakst, J. van Brock, Wegener, Drian, and many others. Journal des Dames sought to be an expression of French elegance. It showed the fashion and also the culture of the early 20th century. Each illustration was printed on high quality paper using excellent pochoir coloring. Pochoir is created when single layers of color are added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil. George Barbier's contributions to this work are particularly desirable. He contributed greatly to design in this era and also had work featured in Vogue. Great artists from the day, such as George Barbier and Andre Marty, contributed beautiful plates to the work. Gazette du Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris. The work was meant to appeal to the upper echelon of Parisian society. The fashion prints beauty and quality of the publication has taken on great appeal through the time. The prints feature dramatic pochoir coloring, which is created when single layers of color are added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil. Many prominent artists contributed the magazine including Barbier, Marty, Brissaud, Worth, Monvel, Lepape, Pacquin, & Poiret. George Barbier's contributions to this work are particularly desirable. He contributed greatly to design in this era and also had work featured in Vogue. Lucien Vogel, fashion publisher, (pictured above), was the brilliant creator of this famous Art Deco fashion magazine. He was well-known and well-connected paving the way for the Gazette's success.

This stunning volume is George Barbier's Dix-Sept Dessins sur le Cantique des Cantiques. The work was published in Paris by La Belle Edition (Bernouard) in 1914. This is one of 25 copies with the extra suite of black and white plates. There were only 240 of this edition ever published. Of particular note is the original opaque painting in the front of the work. This has a signature of George Barbier and is bound to the front of the volume. The work featured 17 designs by Barbier, 13 in full page, printed in black and gold with the additional suite of the illustrations without color. The volume was bound in pink morocco by René Kieffer with gilt vignette on both covers. It has morocco chemise and slipcase. The original wrappers are bound in. George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the greatest French artists of the early 20th century. He was one of the most celebrate art decor artists and especially excelled in illustrating the human figure. He first exhibited in 1911 at the age of 29 where he gained many commissions to design costumes and illustrate works, fashion in particular. This beautiful illustration is from George Barbier and Francis de Miomandre's Designs on the Dances of Vaslav Nijinsky. The work was published in London by C. W. Beaumont in 1913. The image is of the legendary dancer Nijinsky in Scheherazade, Carnaval, and L'Apres-midi d'un Faune and was printed on vellum. The work was limited to 400 in publication. "The designs, although somewhat fantastic in treatment, do convey the impression produced by Nijinsky in his famous characters." (Beaumont) "In his brief time, Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world, a pre-eminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear, Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter, he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait, using, in keeping with Fokine's dicta, the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet, nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe, was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation, such as Anna and Karsavina, as well as to Diaghilev.
