Charles Burton Barber Art for Sale at Auction

Painter

English artist Charles Burton Barber was a master of animal portraiture. He studied at Academy Schools in London, where he learned the art of oil painting. Charles Burton Barber's paintings were primarily of domestic animals and their owners. In 1870 he was hired to paint Queen Victoria’s dogs. The Queen enjoyed his work so much she hired him again in 1894 to paint a portrait of her in a horse-drawn carriage with her grandchildren standing around it.

Many of Charles Burton Barber's prints are so realistic they look like photographs, providing a piece of history frozen in time. He was considered a master of capturing facial expressions and conveying the comfort that animals brought to their owners. However, in his free time, artist Charles Burton Barber much preferred to casually sketch Scottish Highland scenes and wild deer.
