In 1838, some of Ferdinand Barbedienne's sculptures were released to the world when he started a business with inventor and engraver, Achille Collas. This partnership became one of the most important artistic endeavors of the 19th century. Using Collas' invention for reducing sculptures, Ferdinand Barbedienne's bronze miniatures of famous Greek and Roman antique statues were made more accessible to the general public.

The production of Ferdinand Barbedienne's sculptures was recognized when both he and his firm won awards in numerous exhibitions, including the Great Medal of Honor at the 1855 World Fair. His reputation for expertise continued to grow throughout his lifetime, and prices of F. Barbedienne's artwork reflected this approbation. After his death in 1892, his nephew, Gustave Leblanc, maintained the foundry's high standards, purchasing production rights from sculptors such as Auguste Rodin.                 FERDINAND BARBEDIENNE (France, 1810-1892). "Nymphs of the fountain". After JEAN GOUJON (Normandy, 1510-ca. 1564). Four reliefs in bronze. Signed. Plates mounted on wood. Measurements: 60 x 17 cm (each plate); 70 x 26 cm (support). To create the bas-reliefs of these four panels, Ferdinand Barbedienne was inspired by the nymphs sculpted by Jean Goujon at the Fountain of the Innocents in Paris (1547-1549). Just as the Renaissance sculptor had captured the essence of the Greek spirit by reproducing the suppleness of the bodies and the subtle movements of the water-girls with their amphorae, Barbedienne succeeded in transferring from stone to bronze the same gracefulness of the nymphs, whose harmonious anatomies are revealed under the draped garments that envelop the figures with deep and dynamic folds. Ferdinand Barbedienne was a French cabinetmaker and bronze artist, an exponent of the Second Empire style. He worked for several sculptors, such as Antoine-Louis Barye. In 1839 he partnered with Achille Collas, with whom he set up a bronze factory in Paris, which had up to three hundred workers. In addition to bronze objects, they produced furniture and silver pieces, in an eclectic style ranging from neo-Renaissance to neo-Louis XVI. In 1850 he was commissioned to furnish the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. In 1851 he participated in the Great Exhibition in London with an ebony and bronze bookcase based on models by Ghiberti and Michelangelo. He was also present at the Universal Exhibition of 1862 with a bronze vase with champagne enamels, now in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In the 1880s he turned his production towards oriental influences, mainly Chinese and Japanese.                 FERDINAND BARBEDIENNE (France, 1810-1892), after models of STANILAS LEVILLAIN (Le Havre, 1774-Timor, 1801). Pair of vases. Neo-Greek style. Patinated and gilded bronze. Base in red marble. A similar model by Ferdinand Levillian was exhibited at the 1875 Salon with the title "The Sacrifice", included in the catalog published by Barbedienne in 1880. Measurements: 65 x 21 x 21 cm. Pair of patinated bronze vases inspired by ancient Greek amphorae. They stand on claw feet with anthropomorphic torsos representing Hercules, whom we recognize by the lion skin covering him. Their ovoid bodies are decorated with bas-reliefs depicting a ritual sacrificial scene of a lamb and an ephebus playing a double flute or aulos. Palmettes, masks, vine branches, vine leaves and musical instruments complete the decoration. The vessels rest on red marble bases. It is a piece by Ferdinand Barbedienne, following models by Stanilas Levillain, bronze artist, sculptor and medalist who was inspired by ancient scenes and models. Stanislas Levillain studied with the sculptor Jouffroy (1806-1882), before making his debut in 1861 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he continued to exhibit until 1903. At the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867, he was praised for a neo-Grec-style bronze goblet he made for the firm of Blot and Drouard. However, he did not really become famous until 1871, thanks to his association with the great bronze caster Ferdinand Barbedienne, who began exhibiting neo-Grec style lamps, goblets, vases and candlesticks on his stands. Levillain triumphed overwhelmingly at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878, where he was unanimously awarded the gold medal for his classical-style creations. The celebrated bronze caster Servant (1828-c.1890) declared in the report of the Jury of Artistic Bronzes that Levillain's works " chiseled like the finest jewels " and " so diverse and pure in form (...) are of the highest degree of perfection ". After receiving a first class medal at the 1884 Salon for a cup entitled "The Elements, the Months and the Seasons", Ferdinand Levillain won a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle de Paris.

The successful firm earned prestigious awards and critical acclaim and created exquisite bronze candleholders, clocks and lamps for a range of wealthy and prominent clients. After Collas died in 1859, Barbedienne forged on alone, and the company's name changed to simply F. Barbedienne. Barbedienne employed more than 300 workers at that point, and the Maison created a range of furnishings and decorative objects that featured the integration of marble and ormolu accents. This clock is truly ridiculous, has the original key and pendulum ....and has been serviced by the Clock Doc here on the coast. It is marked F.Barbedienne, it is very heavy and includes Marble, Bronze and Black Enamelling. This piece was bequeathed to our vendor from by the Family that owned the property where Marist College operates on today. Great Provenance.... and a great and super Rare Clock. Its condition is excellent. It measures 40cm by 27cm and 75cm high

Presents some pitting on the base. With Mechanical Reduction stamp. Measurements: 27 x 12 x 11 cm; 27,5 x 12 x 11 cm. Pair of busts in bronze representing Bacchus and Ariadne. The foundry F. Barbedienne was founded in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, the latter inventor of a machine to mechanically reduce the format of sculptures. At first they were dedicated to the production of bronze reproductions of sculptures from Roman and Greek antiquity, such as the one presented here. Their first contract to publish works created by a living artist was signed in 1843, with the sculptor François Rude. During the following years, after surviving the economic collapse of 1848, the Barbedienne house signed contracts with many of the sculptors active in Paris at the time, including David d'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, Antoine Louis Barye and others. Achille Collas died in 1859, after which Ferdinand Barbedienne was left as sole partner in a firm that had grown to approximately three hundred workers. In 1865 he was appointed president of the Association of Broncists, a position he held until 1885. However, the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, and the consequent shortage of raw metals, forced Barbedienne to interrupt his artistic production, although he signed a contract with the French government to make cannons, which allowed him to keep the foundry open. After the war, he resumed his sculptural production and put even more effort into signing contracts with various sculptors. At his death in 1891, he was praised as the best foundryman in France, and was called by Albert Susse "a source of pride for the nation". The management of the foundry then fell to Barbedienne's nephew, Gustave Leblanc, who continued the high quality of production and opened branches in Germany, England and the United States. It presents some pitting at the base.

                FERDINAND BARBEDIENNE (France, 1810-1892). Bowls. Marble and gilt bronze mounts. Signed on the base. Measurements: 4 x 15 x 12,5 cm (x2). Pair of marble cups with bronze mounts, designed by Ferdinand Barbedienne inspired by Etruscan models. Ferdinand Barbedienne was a French cabinetmaker and bronze artist, exponent of the Second Empire style. He worked for several sculptors, such as Antoine-Louis Barye. In 1839 he became associated with Achille Collas, with whom he set up a bronze factory in Paris, which had up to three hundred workers. In addition to bronze objects, they produced furniture and silver pieces, in an eclectic style ranging from neo-Renaissance to neo-Louis XVI. In 1850 he was commissioned to furnish the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. In 1851 he participated in the Great Exhibition in London with an ebony and bronze bookcase based on models by Ghiberti and Michelangelo. He was also present at the Universal Exhibition of 1862 with a bronze vase with champagne enamels, now in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In the 1880s he turned his production towards oriental influences, mainly Chinese and Japanese. In 1863 he received the Legion of Honor with the rank of knight, which was elevated to the rank of officer in 1867 and commander in 1874.
