Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossine was a Ukrainian, Russian and French painter of Jewish origin, avant-garde artist (Cubo-Futurism), and inventor. Hw was a contemporary, sometimes a compatriot, and very often a close friend of some of the greatest famous artists of his time, such as Chagall, El Lissitsky, Kandinsky, Larionov, Gontcharova, Malevitch, Pevsner, Arp, Robert, and Sonia Delaunay. He was more often than not a leader as far as art was concerned, and part of all pictorial trends of the beginning of the century. Peint en 1913 Provenance Atelier de l’artiste, Paris. Pauline Baranov-Rossiné, Paris. Collection privée, Suisse. Exposition Moscou, galerie d’Etat Trétiakov, Baranoff-Rossiné, juin-juillet 2002, p. 76, no. 56 (illustré).

BARANOFF-ROSSINÉ, VLADIMIR (1888-1944) Faune Centaure Oil on canvas, 77 by 184 cm. Executed c. 1925. Provenance: Collection of the artist. Thence by descent. Private collection, France. Authenticity certificate from Dimitri Baranoff-Rossiné, the artist’s son. Vladimir Baranoff-Rossiné’s picture Faune Centaure, dated 1925, is an important link between the artist’s work of the 1910s and that of the late 1920s and 1930s. On the one hand, it marks the continuation of a succession of mythological and biblical compositions that Baranoff-Rossiné began in his Orphic works of the mid-1910s, such as Nymphs and Centaurs (1912–1914) and the Apocalypse and Adam and Eve cycles. There is still some similarity in the structure of the figurative and non-figurative elements, which flow rhythmically into one another and in which the lines and colours pulsate, and also in the artist’s interest in dynamics. On the other hand, the subject in this work is no longer as important to the artist as it was previously. It is merely a starting point that enables an extravaganza of colour to be created. In the composition and in the principles behind the construction of the actual shapes, one can already sense that the time is soon to come when Baranoff-Rossiné will start to create the curious “biomorphic structures” simulating the dynamics and tension of real-life natural processes, and that abstract compositions will assume the dominant place in his art. In 1925, since attacks on “leftist” art in the Soviet Union were intensifying, Baranoff-Rossiné decided to emigrate. He made his way to France via Riga and Berlin and settled in Paris, where he exhibited annually at the Salon des Indépendants. The artist continued to experiment: he developed a new visual principle for painting and sculpture, based on the use of the M bius strip, turned to Surrealist images and fashioned multicoloured abstract figures from mixed media. This is a time when the artist seemed to be at a crossroads. His work is a combination of the different styles current in the cosmopolitan artistic environment of Paris — Post-Impressionism and Cubo-Futurism. In his works, he blends ideas derived from Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Paul Signac, Mikhail Larionov and David Burliuk with the experiments of Robert Delaunay and with the drive towards synaesthesia — a fusion of the visual and musical principles in a single work. It is to this period in Baranoff-Rossiné’s oeuvre that the work offered for sale, Faune Centaure, belongs. Even when its images can be identified — a nude female figure lying with her back towards us, a female silhouette with a guitar, a red horseman on a white steed, the outlines of a human hand and a horse’s face, etc. — they are completely devoid of any narrative element and are eye-catching chromatic organisms, generated purely by the imagination of a gifted painter. The images impinge on the viewer by their intense colour, their strange, pulsating rhythm and the eye-dulling, mind-muddling fluidity of their biological and anthropomorphic shapes. The principles sketched out in this composition will be further developed in the artist’s work in the 1930s — in the large, equally dynamic ornamental, abstract adaptations of traditional subjects involving the use of figurative elements (The Martyrdom of St Denis, 1927; Lady Chatterley, 1932, etc.). The “luminous dynamic paintings” of which Baranoff-Rossiné wrote repeatedly in his letters to his friend, the artist Robert Delaunay, do actually encapsulate the singular vision of this Russian avant-gardist, as recorded in such works. All these factors justify us in regarding Faune Centaure as a vivid embodiment of the ideas, so fascinating to Baranoff-Rossiné, of “dynamic painting” and “total musicality”, which interpreted Orphism and Post-Cubism in his individualistic manner.

      BARANOFF-ROSSINÉ, VLADIMIR (1888-1944) Femme Cubiste

      Est: £180,000 - £250,000

BARANOFF-ROSSINÉ, VLADIMIR (1888-1944) Femme Cubiste Oil on canvas, 101 by 153.5 cm. Executed c. 1920. Provenance: Collection of the artist. Thence by descent. Private collection, France. Authenticity certificate from Dimitri Baranoff-Rossiné, the artist’s son. The picture Femme Cubiste by Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné that is offered for sale belongs to the period of his work from the late 1910s and early 1920s, when the “colour utopia” of his sketches seen in the first post- revolutionary years gave way to a desire to achieve a synthesis – a fusion of the colour, figurative and musical principles in a single work. Sensitive as they were to the onward march of the times – it was the period of the Futurist aspirations, “colour dynamics” found in the canvases of Aristarkh Lentulov, and the “sliding” transfusion of light in Mikhail Larionov’s Rayonism – the works of Baranoff-Rossiné exemplified his skilful adaptation of the artistic resources of the different styles that were then current in the cosmopolitan environment of Paris – Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Cubo-Futurism. In that sense, the Femme Cubiste is one of the most interesting and intellectual pictures that Baranoff-Rossiné painted at the time. The canvas is executed in the late Cubist spirit, with the Cubist deformation affecting not only the background of the painting, but also, in part, the actual body of the model. The pictorial surface of the canvas seems to be splintered or fragmented into separate, multicoloured, geometrical planes that emphasise the pure colours and their tonal modulation. The dynamic with which the new forms are established causes the birth and then the disappearance – and morphing into an allusion or pattern – of the features of the female figure, which are rendered in the Madame Récamier-type iconography, traditional in classical art. We are dealing here with one of the first conscious examples of Surrealist dabbling with the great museum masterpieces. The collection in the Louvre in the early 20th century, when Baranoff-Rossiné became thoroughly familiar with it, was already embellished by both of the famous masterpieces – the portraits of Madame Récamier by Jacques-Louis David and François Gérard, who show their model half reclining on a couch with curved backrests of the kind later called a récamier in her honour. As he builds up his composition, Baranoff-Rossiné synthesises treatments of his French counterparts, reproducing not only the pose adopted by the female figure, but also the plane of the footstool, the motif of the downward-flowing drapes and even the elegant curvature of the couch’s backrest, as seen in David’s picture. Baranoff-Rossiné is conducting a proper avant-garde experiment with these famous portraits, seeking – to paraphrase Alexander Pushkin – to “check with the algebra” of Cubism “the harmony” of classical art and to “dissect like a corpse” the ideal beauty of Julie Récamier, who is disrobed for that purpose. In order to achieve the full effect, the artist uses the motif of a fragmented female figure that is broken down into Cubist planes and that perfectly embodies the ideas, so fascinating to the painter, of “dynamic painting” and “total” musicality, which reinterpreted the principles of Orphism and Cubism. The distinct features of the work’s imagery reflect the artist’s experience in Paris. But his idols at that point were not so much Sonia Delaunay or Albert Gleizes as Pablo Picasso and Jean Arp. Compared with Picasso’s classically balanced lines, Baranoff-Rossiné’s rhythmic constructs seem quite fragmented; yet the Femme Cubiste displays the artist’s rare ability to coordinate shades of grey, brown and blue (once again echoing David’s picture) that are not only intense in their colour, but are also imbued with a deep-seated glow. Unlike Picasso’s analytical formal constructs, this work illustrates the ornamental layering of a female figure that is split into planes. The canvas displays not only the artist’s individual reinterpretation of Cubism, but also a tendency towards contemplation, a treatment of the subject as an elusive dream. In his Femme Cubiste, apart from Cubism, the painter also undoubtedly leans towards Surrealism – something that was to become more manifest in his “nude” studies of the second half of the 1920s. Surrealism, which was then more and more forcefully impinging on creative minds, could not, of course, totally eschew the work of Baranoff-Rossiné. Although the painter was merely seen as a disciple of Salvador Dal, Joan Miró and Yves Tanguy in the Surrealist domain, the canvas presented for auction was unexpectedly echoed in a Surrealist masterpiece of the 1950s – René Magritte’s picture Perspective: Madame Récamier by David, which took to its logical and absurd conclusion the main idea behind the Femme Cubiste – the demise of the principles of classical art in the 20th century.

During this time, in which was painted the present still life, he met the artists Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Robert Delaunay is regarded a co-founder of the Fauvism, which propagated a spontaneous application of bold colors and simplified and abstracted forms. As well, the works of the Parisian Cubist painter Albert Gleizes may have inspired Baranov-Rossiné’s painting. Already Rossiné’s early works that have arisen in Russia show expressionist compositions with Fauvist tendencies in combination with cubo-futurist elements so that the Parisian influences can be considered only a development of his style. Condition: The painting is in good condition with still fresh colors and minor superficial soiling, minor craquelure and paint losses. The canvas consists of three sewed (original) pieces and is slightly curled to the upper left. On the front side, the seam is hardly noticeably curved. The examination under UV reveals some areas of retouching, especially to the left leg of the table, next to the drawer and beneath the table. The frame is in good condition with a few small nicks. The size of the painting is 127.5 x 160 cm, and the frame measures 148 x 182 cm. Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossiné (1888-1942/44) Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossiné studied painting in Odessa from 1902, and later at the Academy of St. Petersburg. Between 1907 and 1909, he worked as a freelance artist in St. Petersburg and participated in various avant-garde exhibitions. Between 1910 and 1914, he lived in Paris and came in touch with the French avant-garde. In 1914, he moved to Oslo. After a brief stop in St. Petersburg, he settled in Moscow in 1919, where he taught at the VKHuTEMAS in the Department of shapes and colors. In 1925, he returned to Paris. In addition to painting, Baranov- Rossiné worked as a sculptor and object artist. His work is characterized by a high degree of experimentation and a great imagination. During World War II, Baranov-Rossiné was arrested by the Gestapo and died in a German concentration camp. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
