Johann Baptist Homann, Magnae Britanniae Pars Meridionalis, in qua Regnum Angliae tam in Septem Antiqua Anglo-Saxonum Regna quam in Omnes Hodiernas Regiones Accurate Divisum hic Ostenditur..., 1730 (circa). Hand Color. This handsome map is based upon Visscher's map of 1695, delineating counties and showing the boundaries of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The map is decorated by a beautiful cartouche surrounded by angels and the British coat of arms. Two other angels hold the Welsh armorial shield, and at bottom is a large vignette of the king holding court. The map is densely engraved with detail including roads. This is the second state of the map with Homann's privilege removed.

          Est: $1,500 - $1,800

Map Created to Promote German Immigration to the New World. Colonial Mid-Atlantic United States. Johann Baptist Homann, Virginia Marylandia et Carolina in America Septentrionali Britannorum Industria Excultae, 1730 (circa). Hand Color. This handsome map of the mid-Atlantic colonies is balanced with an exquisite pictorial cartouche filling the lower right. It locates the large hypothetical lake (Apalache Lacus) west of Craven County, Carolina. Some counties and many rivers of eastern Virginia are shown, but western Virginia is vague with only Germantown, Mister Krug's Plantation, and Fort Christ Anna named. Florida is shown extending west of Virginia, all the way north to Lake Erie. Maryland along Cheseapeake Bay [sic] shows many rivers and towns with soundings in most bays, and the coastline of North Carolina is fairly accurate. Philadelphia is shown correctly in this second state (Williams & Johnson) as a block plan resting between the Schuylkill River and another branch, not divided by the rambling Sasquesahanag River as in earlier editions. New Jersey is divided vertically into west and east sections. There is a large Sandy Hook, a minuscule Manhattan, and a thin Long Island Sound. The huge title cartouche depicts European merchants, Indians, trade goods, and the fruits of land and sea -- imagery intended to attract people to the New World.

The chart is engraved onto the face of an elaborate case clock based on one made for Homann by Nuremberg clockmaker Zacharias Landteck with panels of German text at the sides. The map shows the Island of California with Compagnie Land stretching between North American and Asia.

Experiment Aufklärung im Wien des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts, no. 386 Herbert Lachmayer (ed.), Mozart. Experiment Aufklärung im Wien des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts, exhibition catalogue Albertina, Vienna 2006, p. 282, no. 386, p. 168 ill. Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder was one of the most famous and popular portraitists of his time. His clients included personalities from the imperial family, including Franz I and Josef II, as well as the nobility and the upper middle classes. The finely painted facial expression appears alert, with an implied smile on the lips. The sitter's accentuated gaze is directed confidently from the painting, directly towards the viewer. The painting has clear compositional and stylistic similarities with Lampi's portraitures in the years around 1790-1800. In his expert certificate, Dr. Pancheri refers in particular to the portraits by the miniature painter Nicolas Soret (Geneva, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire), Count Franz von Saurau or Baron Johann Baptist von Puthon. The identification of the sitter as Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749-1838) was first suggested in 2004. The catalogue for the Albertina exhibition in 2006 also follows this cautious allocation and points out that this would be Da Ponte's only surviving portrait from his Viennese period (cf. cat. Albertina 2006, p. 282). Dr. Roberto Pancheri finds this plausible, especially since the librettist, who was appointed "Poeta dei Teatri imperiali" by Joseph II, spent most of his time in the imperial city from 1781/82 to 1791 and Lampi was also active in Vienna at this time. In 1783, Da Ponte met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and in the years that followed they were to achieve great fame with their joint operas Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. Lampi, meanwhile, was commissioned to paint several portraits of the emperor and was finally appointed professor at the Vienna Academy of Art in 1786. With increasing prestige and prosperity, it is only natural that the Venetian poet and the painter from Trentino should become acquainted in the capital.
