EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901) Untitled (Docks at Dusk).

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901) Untitled (Docks at Dusk). Oil on thin wood panel, circa late 1870s. 191x254 mm; 7½x10 inches. Signed in pencil, left edge verso. Provenance: Frank Tolles Chamberlin, thence by descent, private collection, California and New Mexico; private collection, New Mexico (2022). Frank Tolles Chamberlin (1873 - 1961) was a landscape painter, and sculptor who lived and worked in California. His wife was Catherine Beecher Stetson, the only daughter of Rhode Island painter Charles Walter Stetson, a close friend and colleague of Bannister's. Stetson and Bannister were part of a small group of artists who founded the Providence Art Club in 1880. After establishing his early career in painting in Boston, where he studied at the Lowell Institute, in 1871 Bannister and his wife Christina Chareteaux moved to Providence. Bannister became one of Providence's leading painters and a respected figure in the artistic community. He focused on landscape painting and won the first prize bronze medal in painting at the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia with Under the Oaks in 1876. He also was one of the original board members of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1878. This oil sketch is a wonderful scene of moored ships in what appears to be the harbor of 1870s Providence - the buildings and smoke stacks looming in the backgound are similar to contemporaneous images. Bannister would paint such small plein air studies on board, sometimes to develop into larger paintings in the studio. A similiar docks scene is found in his oil painting, Providence River (1881). This exciting discovery is one of the earliest Bannister paintings to come to auction. Thank you to Anne Louise Avery, art historian and Edward Bannister expert, for her review of this painting. It is to be included in Avery's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.

      EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901) At "Smith's Palace", Narragansett Bay.

      Est: $60,000 - $90,000

EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901) At "Smith's Palace", Narragansett Bay. Oil on linen canvas, circa 1881. 559x762 mm; 22x30 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. With figure sketches in pencil, verso. Provenance: acquired by Anson and France Viets, Springfield, MA (circa 1920s); thence by descent, private collection, Maine. Exhibited: The Twenty-third Exhibition of the Boston Art Club, Boston Arts Club, Boston, MA, January 29 - February 9, 1881, with a fragment of the label on the stretcher bars verso. This beautiful oil painting is a significant example from Edward M. Bannister's mature period of New England landscape painting. Its Barbizon composition, incorporating a corpse of trees and a body of water in a pastoral setting, is typical of his Rhode Island landscapes of the late 1870s and early 1880s. An almost identical composition was painted in a watercolor by Bannister that was sold at Swann Galleries on October 4, 2018. This painting will be sold with an exhaustive 41 page and illustrated authentication analysis by art historian and Bannister expert Anne Louise Avery, dated October 18, 2022. Through her extensive research on Bannister and the painting's provenance, Avery was able to identify both its location as "Smith's Palace", an old homestead now known as "Smith's Castle", and its exhibition history at the Boston Art Club. The home is one of Rhode Island's oldest, was first built in 1639 and then rebuilt in 1678. It is now a house museum at 55 Richard Smith Drive, near Wickford, Rhode Island, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993. The painting will be included in Avery's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.

At the Philadelphia World Centennial of 1876, Edward Bannister was the only New England artist to win a bronze medal. Born and raised in the small seaport town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, Bannister had a long path to becoming a fine artist and ultimately attributed his art talents to his belief in God. He was the son of a black man from Barbados and a white woman from Canada. All British provinces abolished slavery shortly after Bannister's birth, giving him the latitude to develop his interest for art, studying the major established artists, while living as a free Black. His mother encouraged his interest in art, and he made his earliest studies, in drawing and watercolor, at the age of ten."

Bannister and dated '97 lower right, Oil on Canvas, 25 3/4" x 40 1/2", in a period gesso cast frame, Overall measures 32" x 46". Note: Bannister's landscape paintings are melancholic and serene. Influenced by the Barbizon artists in France, he went to Boston and established himself as an artist. Of Barbados descent and being of mixed race, he was not afforded the ease of art education. Eventually, he gained commissions from prominent Bostonians and in 1876 won first prize for Under the Oaks at the Philadelphia Centennial. He is an original board member of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1878. This painting is comparable to many of his landscapes with it's compositional use of reflection of light on a body of water and darker greens and blacks evocative of the the Barbizon color palette. The canvas is original. There is old varnish build-up and some loosening to canvas at stretcher. There is a 4'x 7" patch in the upper left quadrant. The stretcher is not altered and is of the period. Accompanied with a recent fine art conservation report from a local conservator.

Attrib Edward Mitchell Bannister oil River at Dusk

      Est: $4,000 - $8,000

Bannister, attributed to Edward Mitchell (American, 1828-1901), River at Dusk, oil on canvas, signed E. M. Bannister lower left, 17.75 x 29.75 inches, framed in a period neo-classical revival gilded frame measuring 25.5 x 37 inches. Bannister, born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada is best known today for his tonalist landscapes and coastal scenes of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. He was of mixed race, his father from Barbados and his mother from New Brunswick. His father died in 1832 and his mother in 1844. Thereafter, Bannister and his younger brother, William, went to live on the farm of Harris Hatch, a wealthy merchant. Although his mother had encouraged his interest in sketching and water color, and Hatch further exposed the brothers to music, literature, and art, both brothers went to seas, which was customary for the young men of St. Andrews. In 1848, Bannister and William moved to Boston, where he opened a barbershop for the black community. In 1857 he married Christiana Carteaux, a Narragansett Indian who was born in North Kingston, Rhode Island. She was a wig maker and operated a hair dressing salon in Boston. As the story goes, he had met her when he had applied for work at her salon in 1853. Bannister attributed much of his success as an artist to her critical eye, business acumen and her strong support of him as an artist. In 1858, Bannister was listed as an artist in Boston's city directory and was a member of Boston's black art community, along with sculptor Edmonia Lewis, portraitist Nelson A. Primus, and William H. Simpson. Circa 1862 spent a year in New York City studying finishing and enlarging daguerreotypes, tinting photos and working as a photographer, which he continued upon his return to Boston. More importantly, though, he continued painting and in 1864 was commissioned to paint the portrait of Prudence Nelson Bell, a former slave whose freedom her granddaughter’s husband bought and then brought her to Boston. Bannister also painted a portrait of Robert Gould Shaw, an abolitionist, who was in command of the 54th Massachusetts regiment, the first all-black regiment in the Northeast. Bannister was a self-taught artist, never having taken lessons in painting, although he studied anatomy with the well-known doctor and artist William Rimmer at the Lowell Institute in Boston. Bannister adopted a tonalist style, perhaps influenced by Boston artist William Morris Hunt, who was a proponent of the French Barbizon plein air style of painting. In 1869 the Bannisters moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he concentrated on landscape painting. He became friends with the "Dean of the Providence Painters", George William Whitaker, and Charles Stetson. Bannister himself was one of the most respected artists in Providence. In 1878 he was appointed to the board of the Rhode Island School of Design and in 1880, Bannister and other artists founded the Providence Art Club. They held their first meeting in Bannister’s studio. He loved sailing and owned a sloop, the “Fanchon”, which he sailed in the Narragansett Bay while sketching and painting. Bannister exhibited Boston Art Club (1860s); the Centennial International Exposition of 1876 (Philadelphia, PA, bronze medal); Providence Art Club; Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association (1872, 1881, 1888, medals); and the National Academy of Design (NYC, 1879).

EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901) Crossing the Bridge before Sunset. Oil on linen canvas, 1893. 406x660 mm; 16x26 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right. Provenance: Benjamin E. Perry; thence by descent, private collection, Connecticut. Exhibited: Edward M. Bannister 1828 - 1901: A Centennial Retrospective, Roger King Gallery, Newport, RI, October 21 - November 30, 2001; Kenkeleba House, New York, NY, December 12, 2001 - February 9, 2002. Illustrated: Corrine Jennings and Roger H. King, Jr. Edward M. Bannister 1828 - 1901: A Centennial Retrospective, p. 23. This landscape is an excellent example of Edward M. Bannister's mature landscape painting, representing both the natural beauty of rural Rhode Island and man's place in it. Bannister began to explore more atmospheric and tonal painterly effects in his late 1880s and early 1890s landscapes. His Crossing the Bridge Before Sunset displays a beautiful overall golden hue and painterliness; the fading light of the day, filtered through an atmospheric sky, traverses a rich and verdant countryside. Bannister draws the viewer into the scene by placing the horse drawn cart moving into the center of the composition.

Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) Oil on Panel

Edward Mitchell Bannister (attributed) (New England, 1828-1901) Untitled (Boat Scene) Oil on academy board 9" x 24 1/2" An untitled oil of a man pushing his boat out to sea. According to Anne Louise Avery, leading EM Bannister scholar and author of the artist's forthcoming catalogue raisonne, the painting's uniquely bearded subject is possibly Judge George Newman Bliss (1837-1928), Bannister's good friend and sailing companion, or even Bannister himself. Edward Mitchell Bannister was among the most prominent and celebrated Black American artists of the late 19th century; the medal that he won for a painting entered into the 1876 World Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia has been described the first time an African American had ever won a national award for his artwork. Though not formally trained, Bannister painted in the Barbizon School fashion, and found great popularity during his life. He co-founded the Providence Art Club in 1880. Signed to the bottom right, and presented in an antique frame that measures 12 1/2" x 28". Provenance: A private Texas collection, thence from a private estate in Delaware which held another Bannister work sold through Newport's Roger King Gallery. Though the provenance is incomplete, it is the opinion of leading Bannister scholarship that the painting's style and subject are consistent with those executed by the artist's hand, and that this oil is "very likely a Bannister."

Provenance: private collection, Pennsylvania. This beautiful, atmospheric river scene by Edward M. Bannister is an excellent example of his mature, late period painting. Banner painted several similar river landscapes in 1879, a prolific and busy year for him. This river scene could possibly be in New Hampshire, where Bannister often took painting excursions.
