Provenance: estate of the artist; private collection, New York (2017). This dynamic mid-century painting is a very scarce example of abstraction by Henry Bannarn. Around 1949, after concluding his military service in South Carolina, Bannarn returned to New York. He began his shift from social realism to modernism in his practice soon after. Bannarn was close to Charles Alston and Norman Lewis in New York from their time together during the Harlem Renaissance and the 306 - a group of Harlem writers and artists who met in the studios of Bannarn and Alston. Bannarn appears particularly influenced by Norman Lewis's nocturnal painting of New York, including Lewis's City Night, 1949, collection of MoMA, New York. Bannarn's interest in abstraction is also seen in the painting Modernist Exhibition, 1957, private collection, which was on view recently at the Birmingham Museum of Art - it depicts a black woman viewing a modernist art exhibit.

Henry Wilmer Bannarn (1910 - 1965) Oil on Canvas, Signed, Measures ( 22 x 24 inches ) w/frame ( 24 x 28 inches ) Henry W. Bannarn was born in Wetumpka, Hughes County, Oklahoma on July 17, 1910. When he was still a very young child, the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. He died on September 20, 1965 in Brooklyn, New York. His favorite subjects were related to the American negro and the struggle for equality and justice. Some of his subjects were Frederick Douglass, John Brown, Richard B. Harrison, Matthew Henson - heroes of his time and before. He also chose to sculpt lynch victims and midwives. His art was strongly rooted in his social conscience throughout his life. He was well known for his work with wood, stone, oil and water color. His watercolors were brilliant and powerful. Much of his work can be described as falling into the modern/abstract area.

Bannarn first worked from his home studio in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, then, three years later, in a brownstone in Bedford Stuyvesant on the corner of Lafayette and Marcy Avenues. From his fourth floor studio, in Sam's Luncheonette, he recorded the demolition of a neighboring building that was located on the Northeast corner of the intersection. He also documented the change that was occurring in his neighborhood including the growth of public spaces and the public school system.

Provenance: the artist's daughter, Jean Merriman This is an extremely rare and important work by a Harlem Renaissance sculptor. Bannarn and Charles "Spinky" Alston formed the 306 Group in Harlem, where he mentored Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, and others.

Born in Wetumpka, OK, Bannarn moved with his family to Minneapolis when he was a child. There Bannarn studied at the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design). He won two first place prizes in sculpture at the Minnesota State Art Fair and showed at the Harmon Foundation in New York in 1933. With a grant from the Minneapolis philanthropist James Ford Bell, Bannarn moved to New York in 1934. There Bannarn and Charles Alston rented the studio which became the Harlem Workshop or the "306", a creative center and meeting place for artists, musicians and poets. Bannard also taught at the Harlem Community Art Center, where he worked alongside Norman Lewis and Charles Alston, and mentored Jacob Lawrence. Rowhouses, Charleston, SC is a scarce example of Bannarn's modernist painting made during his wartime service in the US Army. Bannarn was inducted around 1940, and his painting skills were soon put to use in the Army's Special Services Division. In Camp Plauche, Harahan, Louisiana, he created a series of murals depicting soldiers on furlough in various theaters of operation. Later at the Charleston Port of Embarkation, South Carolina, he completed murals depicting American soldiers on leave around the world, and recruitment and war bond posters, painting some of the the first service and support images to depict African American soldiers as a fighting men. Bannarn continued to paint his own work at the time, and returned to his studio practice in New York in 1949.

Provenance: private collection, California. Henry W. Bannarn was born in Wetumpka, Oklahoma on July 17, 1910. At a young age, Bannarn's family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he studied at the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design). He received a grant from the Minneapolis philanthropist James Ford Bell, giving him the opportunity to move to New York City and further his career. In their Harlem Sutdio, Bannarn and Charles Alston founded the Alston-Bannarn workshop at 306 West 141 Street. It became known as the "306" and was a creative center and meeting place for artstis, musicians and poets. Bannard became a teacher at the Harlem Community Art Center and was also part of the WPA Art Project. His work is mostly known for confronting issues among the African-American communities and the struggle for equality and justice. Bannarn exhibited at Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, the Schomburg Center of Research for Black Culture, Harmon Foundation, Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Provenance: private collection, North Carolina. In the beginning of 1934, Henry Bannarn along with friend and fellow artist, Charles Alston, founded the Alston-Bannarn Workshop in Harlem. The workshop, commonly refered to as the "306" because of its address at 306 W. 141st Street, would become one of the main workshops where young artists in Harlem could take classes and receive guidance, in addition to Augusta Savage's studios and the Harlem Art Workshop. Bannarn's pupils at the Alston-Bannarn workshop included Jacob Lawrence and Bob Blackburn.Hills 21.

HENRY W. BANNARN (1910 - 1965) Cleota. Painted plaster, 1932. 432x191x234 mm; 17x7 1/4x9 1/4 inches. Signed, dated "6/9/32" and inscribed "To Cleota" in the plaster, at the rear of the neck truncation. Titled in the plaster, at the front edge of the base. Provenance: private collection. This impressive portrait is the first known sculpture by this artist to come to auction, and is a very scarce, early example of his work before the WPA. Born in Wetumpka, OK on July 17, 1910, Bannarn moved with his family to Minneapolis when he was a child. This sculpture was made before Bannarn had won two first place prizes in sculpture at the Minnesota State Art Fair Art Galleries and showed at the Harmon Foundation in New York in 1933. He moved to New York in 1934 after leaving the Minneapolis School of Art. He and Charles Alston rented the studio that became the Harlem Workshop or the "306." Cleota Josephine Collins (1893 -1976) was a soprano singer from Ohio who enjoyed some acclaim during the Harlem Renaissance.
