      Isaac C. Baker (American/New York, 19th c.)

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Isaac C. Baker (American/New York, 19th c.), "William Berry" and "Louisa Gould Berry", 1834, 2 oils on panel, each signed, dated and information on sitter en verso, both 27 in. x 22 in., framed alike. (2 pcs.) Provenance: Didier, Inc., Estate of David A. Wojciechowski. Note: During the 1830s, Isaac Baker is recorded as having a studio on Beaver Street in Albany, New York. An itinerant portraitist, Baker painted William Berry and Louisa Gould Berry in 1834 before traveling to other cities after 1837. A gunsmith, William Berry had a shop at 7 Beaver Street near Baker’s studio. Berry is depicted with a typical 1830s neck scarf, while his wife’s elegant balloon sleeves and hairstyle were popular during the same time period. The beautifully painted earrings, lace scarf, and coral necklace add to the charm of her lovely portrait.
