            • Marilyn Monroe Publicity Photo by Frank Powolny (1902-1986)
              Jan. 15, 2018

Marilyn Monroe Publicity Photo by Frank Powolny (1902-1986)

              Est: $2,000 - $3,000

In 1946, by age 20, Norma Jeane Baker, who began modeling after being discovered in an airplane factory during WWII, had already appeared on 33 magazine covers. This lead to an opportunity for a screen test at Twentieth-Century Fox that resulted in a one year contract, upon which she signed her new name for the first time, Marilyn Monroe. Her contract was not renewed, but she signed a new contract with Columbia that produced no roles or parts until she had an affair with Johnny Hyde, Executive Vice President of the William Morris Agency. A cameo appearance in Love Happy, a Marx Brothers comedy, was followed by bit parts in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve, but Hyde died in 1950, effectively ending her relationship with Columbia. She went to Famous Artists who got her a 7-year contract, once again, with Fox. By the end of 1951, her popularity has exploded and more than 2000 fan letters per week were pouring into the studios resulting in her being awarded the starring roles in two movies, Don't Bother To Knock and Monkey Business that were both released in 1952. It was during Monkey Business photographer Frank Powolny did a publicity shoot of Marilyn. This sepia-toned photograph is from that shoot and is one of the most iconic images of Marilyn Monroe ever produced. It is not known how many of this photo were sent to fans, but so many that most were not actually signed by her, but by her assistants or studio secretaries. This one was sent to Dorothy Hashimoto-Akari of San Jose, CA. and is signed, To Dorothy Warmest Regards Marilyn Monroe. The same image, in a very similar hand, was signed by Marilyn and sent to Joe Dimaggio. Did the most iconic Hollywood legend personally sign this one, or is it like most, signed with a Secretarial Signature? Probably the later. C. 1952. 10 x 8 inches

              Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Artist: LUCIEN BERTAUX (1905-?) Size: 45 1/2 x 116 1/2 in./115.4 x 296 cm Ch. Maillard Pub. Lucien Bertaux not only created many of Josephine Baker's posters, he designed a great many of her splendid costumes as well. So it's probable this astonishing, and astonishingly rare poster is a Bertaux double-whammy: a larger-than-life, 9-foot-tall masterpiece of Josephine adorned in the garb of Thai royal splendor. This two-sheet poster is liberally accented with metallic gold. It has likely never come up for auction before. (Josephine Baker)

Josephine Baker / Folies Bergère. 1936

              Est: $20,000 - $25,000

Artist: MICHEL GYARMATHY (1908-1996) Size: 45 5/8 x 124 in./115.8 x 315 cm Delattre, Paris "Michel Gyarmathy, who arrived in Paris in 1933, was since 1935 a regular collaborator of the Folies. This, in fact, was for him also a reunion with Josephine, for as a youngster in Budapest in 1927, he had already created a poster for her. This beautiful two-sheet poster, blazing with spunk, freshness and movement, depicts the smiling star [high-stepping on the Folies stage]. Bedecked like an African dancer, she wears bright red feathers around her ankles, her waist and on her breasts which by dint of Gyarmathy's and the music hall's magic seem to be palm trees which extend into Josephine's hairdo" (Folies-Bergère, p. 12). Artist: JEAN CHASSAING (1905-1938) Size: 41 1/2 x 61 3/8 in./107.8 x 156 cm Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Drawing clear influence from his friend Paul Colin's many renderings of the performer, this poster is an Art Deco tour de force. It is also shrouded in a bit of mystery as, at the time of its creation, Josephine Baker was just finishing Paris qui Remue - leaving it unclear as to what this poster would have been promoting.

Artist: MICHEL GYARMATHY (1908-1996) Size: 7 1/2 x 16 1/4 in./19 x 41.3 cm "Michel Gyarmaty, who arrived in Paris in 1933, was since 1935 a regular collaborator of the Folies. This, in fact, was for him also a reunion with Josephine, for as a youngster in Budapest in 1927, he had already created a poster for her. This beautiful poster, blazing with spunk, freshness and movement, depicts the smiling star [high-stepping on the Folies stage]. Bedecked like an African dancer, she wears bright red feathers around her ankles, her waist and on her breasts which by dint of Gyarmaty's and the music hall's magic seem to be palm trees which extend into Josephine's hairdo" (Folies-Bergère, p. 12). In his latter years, the artist took to spelling his name "Gyarmathy."

Bedos, Paris Michel Gyarmathy, the art director of the Folies Bergère, created this extraordinary and unique image based on the photograph by Harcourt. It became not only the classic poster promoting Josephine’s legendary return to the Folies Bergère (in the Féeries et Folies” revue) after the end of the Second World War, but also the cover of the acclaimed biography “Josephine: The Hungry Heart,” by Jean-Claude Baker and Chris Chase. “Josephine wanted to offer Paris a new Folies-Bergère; there would still be naked girls, but Josephine the war heroine would cover her body with thirty different costumes and play many famous women of history. She would be Eve, go on to the Empress Josephine, and finally she would personify the unfortunate Mary, Queen of Scots” (Josephine, p. 285). Provenance: Personal archives of Gyarmathy at the Folies Bergère.
