William Baillie (1723 Killbride (Carlow) - 1810 London) after Nathaniel Hone (1718 - 1730 ): Self-portrait, after the painting by Nathaniel Hone, 1783, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on , rolled-on on Paper Inscription: Signed in the printing plate: "William Baillie". Date: 1783 Description: During his lifetime, after his career in the army, William Baillie was particularly known for his expertise in the field of fine art. As an advisor and dealer, he looked after the collections of the Earl of Bute and Lord Liverpool. His enthusiasm for printmaking techniques, which he taught himself for the most part, probably helped him on his way to becoming a respected connoisseur. He was particularly fond of Rembrandt and copied many of the Dutchman's works, thus, together with his friend Nathaniel Hone, greatly increasing Rembrandt's fame, especially in England. Our self-portrait, engraved by Baillie after his friend Hone's painting, is not only an expression of friendship, but also of Rembrandt's enthusiasm. It reveals not only the highly skilful mastery of printmaking technique, but also Rembrandt's strong influence on both artists. For example, Hone quoted the hat and the fur-trimmed coat for the portrait almost verbatim from Rembrandt's etching Portrait of Cornelis Anslo. In his print, Baillie finally fitted the painting into an oval frame, whereby the hand still visible in the painting has disappeared and the effect becomes more gravitational. The integration of the curtain, which the two putti open in front of Baillie's quasi-immortalised portrait, is certainly to be understood as an homage to Rembrandt's Holy Family with the Curtain or Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter. Keywords: Artist, Self-portrait, Putti, Irish, English, 18th century, Classicism, Portraits, United Kingdom,

William Baillie (1723 Killbride (Carlow) - 1810 London) after Nathaniel Hone (1718 - 1730 ): Self-portrait, after the painting by Nathaniel Hone, 1783, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on China paper, rolled-on on Paper Inscription: Signed in the printing plate: "William Baillie". Date: 1783 Description: During his lifetime, after his career in the army, William Baillie was particularly known for his expertise in the field of fine art. Thus he looked after the collections of the Earl of Bute and Lord Liverpool as an advisor and dealer. His enthusiasm for printmaking techniques, which he largely taught himself, may have helped him on his way to becoming a respected connoisseur. He was particularly fond of Rembrandt and copied numerous works by the Dutchman, thus ensuring, together with his friend Nathaniel Hone, that Rembrandt's fame was greatly increased, especially in England. Our self-portrait, engraved by Baillie after the painting of his friend Hone, is not only an expression of friendship but also of Rembrandt's enthusiasm. We can see in it not only the highly skilful mastery of the printmaking technique, but also the strong influence of Rembrandt on both artists. For the portrait, for example, Hone has quoted the hat and the fur-trimmed coat almost verbatim from Rembrandt's etching Portrait of Cornelis Anslo. Baillie finally fitted the painting into an oval framing in his print, whereby the hand still visible in the painting has disappeared and the effect becomes more grave. The integration of the curtain that the two putti open in front of Baillie's quasi-perpetuated portrait is surely to be understood as an homage to Rembrandt's Holy Family with the Curtain or Vermeer's Briefelesendes Mädchen. CAPTAIN WILLIAM BAILLIE (IRISH, 1723-1810) Black and white engraving of Hansken the Elephant taken from a drawing by Rembrandt Published 1 August 1778 Captain William Baillie (1723-1810) was born at Kilbride, Co.Carlow. He was educated at Dr. Sheridan’s School in Dublin. He travelled to London with the intention of studying law but decided to follow his younger brother into the army. He joined the 13th Regiment of Foot and was present at the Battle of Culloden, 1746. Afterwards he joined the 51st Regiment and fought at the Battle of Minden, 1759. He moved to the 17th Light Dragoons before relinquishing his Commission in 1761. He now commenced a career in the arts. He was an advisor to The Marquis of Bute and Lord Liverpool. His fame rests with his work as an engraver, primarily with his prints after the works of Rembrandt (1606-1669). These works were published in two large volumes by John Boydell, titled A series of 225 Prints and Etchings After Rembrandt. Examples of his work can be found in The National Gallery of Ireland; The Metropolitan Museum, New York; and The Getty Museum, California. The elephant, Hansken arrived in Holland in 1637 as a gift to The Prince of Orange from The Directors of The East India Company. The unlikely sight of such an exotic animal in The Netherlands at the beginning of the seventeenth-century inspired Rembrandt to make drawings of the elephant (one of which is in the collection of The British Museum). The elephant was kept at The Prince of Orange’s Palace at Rijswijk. When The Prince took up a position in Brazil, the elephant was given to his cousin, Johan Maurits. He sold her to an entrepreneur who put her on show throughout The Netherlands and later in France, Germany and Switzerland. She arrived in Italy where she performed her repertoire of thirty-six tricks, opening doors, waving flags, etc. She died in Florence in 1654. Her skeletal remains can be seen today in The Museo della Specola.8½ x 11 inches (22 x 29 cm.)
