She was the daughter of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, the financier, philanthropist, and collector of modern art whose gift to the nation of nearly 6,000 works of art established his namesake museum on the National Mall. She also was a longtime friend of Joan Wheeler Ankrum, the founder of the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, whose gallery exhibited many African American artists.

Provenance: gift from the artist, Atlanta; Julian Bond, Atlanta, GA; thence by descent, private collection. Herman "Kofi" Bailey made this striking double portait of Civil Rights leader and politician Julian Bond when both were living in Atlanta. Beginning in the 1960s, Bailey was often commissioned by Bond and John Lewis to produce artwork to promote the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee on posters, pamphlets and book covers. In the late 1960s to mid- 1970s, Bond served six consecutive terms as a state senator in Georgia.

        Herman "Kofi" Bailey (American, 1931-1981). Lithograph on paper, with green ground to plate area, signed and dated 73, titled, and numbered 26/200 in margin. Also personally dedicated below margin "To Bill, Love and struggle, Kofi Shabazz '77". 22" x 17.75" (plate size), 31.5" x 25.5" (framed). Bailey was a noted African American artist, born in Chicago, studied in Los Angeles, and was associated with many of the leading painters and philosophers associated with the Harlem Renaissance. His images in conte crayon and subsequent lithographs of figures were his best known subjects.

        Herman "Kofi" Bailey 1931-1981 Untitled c. 1970 Charcoal and conte crayon on illustration board 33 x 24 inches (image) Signed; Inscribed verso, U.N. N.Y. Herman, also known as "H. Kofi Bailey" and "Kofi X", was born in Chicago, but grew up in Los Angeles. He studied at Alabama State University, Howard University and University of Southern California (MFA). Bailey was concerned with a pan-African worldview, and as a visual artist believed that creating images of black people would work universally to embrace and celebrate positive attitudes toward black people (in the case of non-blacks) and be self-affirming (in the case of black people themselves). Bailey studied with Alain Locke, Sterling Brown, and James Porter at Howard, and after graduating was closely associated with figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Kwame Nkrumah (Nkrumah was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, but he spent 10years in the United States studying as a young man). Bailey was best-known for his drawings in charcoal and conte crayon, and the subsequent prints. He exhibited at the High Museum of Art; Spelman College; Delaware Art Museum; and Lewis-Waddell Gallery in Los Angeles.

Signed, titled, dated "7/26/73" and numbered 37/100 in pencil, lower margin. Dedicated "From Jane and Howard to Maya and Paul 1/24/74" in ink, lower margin. Pan-Africanist Kofi Bailey gained inspiration and motivation to create art from his social and civic involvement within the African diaspora. Bailey had close ties to political figures who fought racism and colonialism such as Kwame Nkrumah and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He lived in Ghana during the 1960s, which is where many of his artistic and cultural sensitivities were cultivated.
