            Dec. 06, 2013

Clayton Bailey, Life-Size Scrap Art Robot, USA, around 1980

            Est: €3,200 - €4,000

Life-size, electrified robot made of scraps of metal, plastic, light bulbs USA, late 1970s / early 1980s Clayton Bailey (b. 1939) - US American artist Body made of a cooler Flashing eyes and 'Bad - Good' measure Dimensions: 215 x 70 x 25 cm (h x l x w) Very good condition Clayton Bailey's life-size Scrap Art Robots made a lasting impression with their appearance in the 1986 action movie 'Cobra' with Brigitte Nielson and Sylvester Stallone, which was nominated with a mere six Golden Raspberry Awards! The size of this robot by Clayton Bailey is remarkable: at roughly 2.15 m, this 7-footer is as tall as Dirk Nowitzki! Scrap Art robots of this size were built by Clayton Bailey up until the 1980s; he still builds robots and space guns out of scrap metal with extraordinary success today. The appearance of his scrap metal and kitchen utensil robot in the movie 'Cobra' in 1986 with Sylvester Stallone, in which Brigitte Nielsen poses for a photo shoot in midst of Bailey's robots remains unforgettable. The robot's body consists of a cooler that can still be opened. Other parts came from cars, household objects and other industrially manufactured left-overs. When connected to a power circuit, the robot's eyes flash. With his wide grin, protruding ears and long nose, the robot makes quite a friendly impression. Therefore the "Bad - Good" measure on his chest leaves more room for "Good". The "Surveillance System" also features a humming mechanism (not working). The robot is in very good condition with signs of age and wear, such as minor scratches and dents. The humming mechanism is no longer working. The dimensions of the robot are 215 x 70 x 25 cm (height x length x width). Clayton Bailey (b. 1939) Clayton Bailey, ceramist, sculptor, and self-proclaimed 'mad scientist', aims to surprise and delight the beholder with his art. His eccentric work is mainly fashioned from clay, ceramics or scrap metal. His robot sculptures and futuristic space guns, as well as his ceramic fossils from the 'Bone Age' were produced under his pseudo-scientific alter ego Dr. George Gladstone.
