      BARBARA BAEKLAND (1922-1972): UNDERWATER FANTASY

      Est: $300 - $600

BARBARA BAEKLAND (1922-1972): UNDERWATER FANTASY Pastel on paper, signed lower right. 29 1/2 x 19 3/4 in. (paper), 38 1/2 x 28 1/2 in. (frame). Note: Barbara Daly Baekeland (1922 - 1972) was an American socialite who was murdered by her son, Anthony in London in 1972. She was married to Brooks Baekeland who was the son of Leo Baekeland, the inventor of Bakelite plastic. She started her early career in New York as a model for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Once married to Brooks they lead a very social nomadic lifestyle, renting houses and villas in London, Paris, Zermatt, Cap d'Antibes, Majorca and throughout Italy. She had a troubled relationship with both her husband and son. The former requested a divorce, which contributed to Barbara's severe depression and a suicide attempt. Allegedly, Barbara had an incestuous relationship with her gay son, Anthony. She also attempted to cure his homosexuality with prostitutes which led to Anthony's animosity towards his mother. Anthony ultimately stabbed her with a kitchen knife, in her Cadogan Square penthouse killing her instantly. When the police arrived he was ordering Chinese food. He later confessed and was charged with her murder. Provenance: A gift from the artist to the consignor. Property of a New York collector.
