Henry Bacon (1839 - 1912) Beach at Etretat Watercolor on Paper. Known for both his accurately painted genre scenes and his watercolor renderings of views of Normandy and Egypt. Bacon exhibited no fewer than thirty-one paintings at the Paris Salon between 1867 and 1896. Henry Bacon (US/France 1839-1912). Large painting of a fantastic subject, done while Bacon was in Paris. The work features what appears to be a beautiful woman fallen asleep while awaiting her lover. The work is likely set in the Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. The work is oil on canvas. It is signed and dated, (1889) with "Paris" inscribed next to the signature. We believe this work was the basis for a well known print. The work is framed, in what is a period, likely the original, frame. The frame is in very good antique condition with expected rubbing to gilding and minor gesso loss to edges/corner. This is an important historic work of art by one of America's best 19th Century painters. It should be noted that Bacon was a Civil War veteran (wounded somewhat severely) and turned his wartime misfortune to become a well known and critically acclaimed painter of some renown. He exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889. It is quite possible this painting was exhibited during this time. We have not been able to confirm this in our research as yet. This is a genuine showcase work of art and is a museum quality work. Measurements: 45 7/8" H x 30" W - Exterior Frame 39 3/8" H x 23 3/4" W - canvas/work
