          Est: $3,200 - $4,800

[Civil War]. John Badger Bachelder Archive.  Significant grouping of material from artist and Gettysburg historian John B. Bachelder, including several Civil War letters written while with the Army of the Potomac. John Badger Bachelder, (1825-1894), a portrait and landscape painter, lithographer, and photographer, is best known as the preeminent 19th-century historian of the Battle of Gettysburg. Born in Gilmanton, NH, he was educated at Capt. Alden Partridge's Military School in Pembroke, NH; Later moved to Reading, PA, where he became Principal of the Pennsylvania Military Institute in 1851; Appointed a Colonel in the Pennsylvania State Militia in 1852, a title he retained for the rest of his life. In 1853, he returned to New Hampshire, where he married Elizabeth B. Stevens (a niece to Civil War General Benjamin Butler) and began his career as an artist. Early in the Civil War, in 1862, he decided to accompany the Army of the Potomac in hopes of being present at a decisive battle so he could paint an accurate rendition of it. His most notable work was immediately after the Battle of Gettysburg, where he studied the terrain and created an isometric map of the battlefield, visited field hospitals and interviewed wounded soldiers of both armies, and determined the position on his map of every unit engaged in the battle. That Fall, he published a panoramic view of Gettysburg. In 1870, he commissioned artist James Walker to paint "The Repulse of Longstreet's Assault at the Battle of Gettysburg", a large canvas measuring 7.5' x 20'. Bachelder wrote an accompanying guidebook and toured with the canvas, lecturing across the U.S. In 1873, he published a guidebook of the battle. Bachelder is probably responsible more than any other man for the placement of monuments and battlefield markers, both Union & Confederate, serving from 1883 to 1887 as Superintendent of Tablets and Legends for the Gettysburg Memorial Association. He was the official historian of the battle; his 2550-page history, for which the Government paid him $50,000 to write, was sent to Washington in 1886. This grouping includes: Nine letters written by Bachelder during the Civil War, including several from the field while with the Army of the Potomac. There is much excellent content (excerpts below). Also includes an 1864 letter to the brother of Gen. Benjamin Butler, advising him of the death of Gen. Butler's older brother, Col. Andrew Jackson Butler. Four-page manuscript poem by Bachelder, written at Pembroke, NH, March 7, 1850, to his future wife, Lizzie. An 1868 booklet, "Key to Bachelder's Isometrical Drawing of the Gettysburg Battle-Field with a Brief Description of the Battle" (printed by C.A. Alvord, NYC), 12 pages, plus printed wraps, with testimonials by several Union Generals - a scarce imprint. Small leather-bound memorandum book with metal clasp and original pencil, with drawings by Bachelder, some hand-colored. The first page is signed by him: " Noticeable Things by Jno. B. Bachelder," and has drawings of things seen at the 1878 Chicago Exposition, including "Akam's Parlor Billiard Table", with notes for each drawing; Native American " Resting Place for the Dead. Standing Rock, Oct. 31, 1878"; " Hot House, Springfield, Ill.," " Monticellow, Va., Nov. 15, 1878," and more. A June 5, 1861 letter dated at Nottingham, NH from the brother of Gen. Benjamin Butler (not signed) to Col. B.P. Cilley, providing a sketch of Gen. Butler's lineage and early life. A partial letter by Bachelder (the final 4 pages of a longer letter), writing of taking a number of Generals and members of Congress to a picnic at the Gettysburg Battlefield. A large autograph album page signed by Bachelder at Nottingham, NH, Aug. 26, 1879, to Miss Philbrick, with fancy calligraphy. Several pencil sketches, some by Bachelder, and most seemingly

JOHN B. BACHELDER (1825-1894). Preeminent nineteenth century historian of the Battle of Gettysburg integral to its preservation; landscape painter and photographer. ALS, 8pp separate, 8"x121/2", Washington, DC, Dec 1892. On lightly lined paper responding to former Confederate Major General Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905). Superb historic content describing the Battle of Gettysburg. Bachelder answers Lee's inquiries concerning the battle. He sets down Lee's questions, and then provides his views. A sampling: "...[George] Pickett's division was formed on the morning of July 3d in two lines of battle, which ran diagonally to the Union position which they assaulted with [James] Kemper's and [Richard] Garnett's brigades in the front line. This line lay during the cannonade that preceded the charge, with the right of Kemper 1860 yards, the left of Garnett 1160 yards, and the centre of [Lewis] Armistead 2660 yards from the Union line. A ridge along which runs the Emmitsburg road, and behind which General Pickett formed his division and on which several battalions of Confederate artillery were placed lay between the two armies. As Pickett's division advanced over this ridge the left of his line became first exposed, the division coming under fire at an average of 1100 yards from the Union position...Kemper's advance was resisted by the Sixteenth Vermont infantry deployed as skirmishers, commanded by Colonel Wheelock G. Veazey......all of which after a short but sharp encounter were brushed away...When Kemper's brigade again united with Garnett's brigade, it changed direction to its right, and the brigades advanced to the stone wall, followed by Armistead's...The two commands advanced...[Alexander] Webb's brigade was formed with the Sixty-ninth Pennsylvania and a detachment of the seventy-first Pennsylvania lying behind a stonewall...When the Confederate line charged the Union troops at the stone wall...fell back and formed behind the rear stone wall...large numbers of Kemper's men sought shelter behind some rocky, bush-covered knoll, others advancing with Garnett's brigade, and threw themselves behind the wall (General Garnett was killed within twenty feet of it) where they engage in a hand-to-hand conflict...Armistead's brigade following with Heth's division joining on it's left, came quickly up to the support of Garnett's men...and when they halted at the stone wall General Armistead, drawing his sword for the first time, placed his hat in its point, and raising it as he sprang over the wall, cried, 'Boys, we must use the cold steel; who will follow me?'...He fell 33 yards from General Webb's line on the Ridge...Longstreet's whole assaulting column found itself within a vortex of fire, through which it was impossible to advance and difficult to retreat. Thousands fell dead or wounded...." Boldly penned and signed. Occasional edge chipping and small tears with small paper loss of no affect; light general toning; occasional light even discoloration and soiling of minimal affect; else text remains dark and easily legible. VG. This letter is published in Bachelder Papers, 3 Volumes, Ladd and Sauers, 1995.
