    Hugo Baar was originally a Czech landscape painter who acquired the basics of painting at the School of Fine Arts in Vienna under the director H. Storck and in the studio of Rudolf Ribarz in Munich and under G. Hackel and H. Knier. He mainly devoted himself to landscape painting and depicted it in the spirit of art nouveau aesthetics.     Winterly Landscape, about 1905 Oil on Canvas Signed lower right, Verso inscribed with Date on Strecher 19,7 x 23,6 in framed In Hugo Baar's winter landscape, the eye wanders over an atmospheric environment. The snow seems to have already melted in some places and the warm light shines on the trees and houses. The small stream in the foreground of the picture gives the picture spatial depth and mediates between foreground and background. The sky and the landscape are worked out in a sweeping ductus. In some places a rhythmic division into short or broad brushstrokes as well as dabs seems to be recognizable, which make the painting appear as a fleeting snapshot. The colorfulness is determined by pastel tones and the atmospheric representation of light. Three tiny holes (approx. 1 mm2) in the screen, only visible against the light. Do not disturb the overall impression.
