    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

ERNEST AZÉMA (Adge, Hérault, 1871- 1917). "Flamenco dancers", 1912. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Size: 115 x 89 cm; 150 x 125 cm (frame). In this canvas Ernest Azéma portrays a woman with jet-black hair dancing inside a flamenco tablao, dressed in a bright red manila shawl. Around her, other characters dance and play instruments in a relaxed way, enjoying a unique and fleeting moment. The artist uses a free and loose brushstroke, and relies on chromatic contrasts to create the drawing and suggest the space. Painter and sculptor, Ernest Azéma was a student of the symbolist artist Gustave Moreau. Although we do not know much of his biography, we know that between 1892 and 1912 he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, with honorable mention in 1898 and third class medal in 1901. Most likely, Azéma traveled throughout Spain looking for sources of inspiration and new artistic impulses, ending up in Andalusia, a region where he was enraptured by its customs, dances and traditions, which he immortalized in his paintings. The work in question is characterized by the large group of people who star in it, centered in the lower part of the canvas, highlighted by their colorful clothes and their lively positions, clearly contextualized in the interior of a Flemish tavern.
