            Sep. 11, 2024

            Michael Ayrton,  Street Corner, 1949-50;

            Est: £2,000 - £3,000

            Michael Ayrton,  British 1921-1975 -  Street Corner, 1949-50;  oil on panel, signed lower right 'Michael Ayrton', 36 x 45 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  The Redfern Gallery, London (label attached to the reverse of the frame);  Col. A. S. Richardson, purchased from the above on the 20th June 1951 and thence by descent  Note: Ayrton exhibited with Redfern in the late 1940s and a painting of a similar subject 'Encounter No 1, 1947' originally with the gallery, depicting two figures in an alleyway, one wearing a cloak, is now in the Jerwood Collection. In the late 1940s Ayrton had visited Italy, where he was inspired by the artists of the quattrocento such as Masaccio and Piero della Francesca. The impact of their work can be seen in the highly tonal use of colour and careful drawing and modelling of the figures.

            Michael Ayrton, British 1921–1975 Sculpture Maze Maker I, 1964; bronze, edition of 9, numbered on base '8/9', 40.5(H) x 21(W) x 8(D) cm including base (ARR) Provenance: with Grosvenor Gallery, London; private collection, purchased from the above and thence by descent Exhibited: Grosvenor Gallery, London, 'Michael Ayrton: bronzes, paintings, collages and drawings 1964-1966', 7th June 2nd July 1966, cat. no.2 Note: with thanks to Justine Hopkins of the Michael Ayrton Estate for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work. This sculpture was the first of a series of Maze Makers exploring the relationship of Daedalus, the master-craftsman of Crete, with the labyrinth he made for King Minos to conceal and contain the Minotaur. In the following year (1965) Ayrton evolved his ideas through two more small works ('Maze Maker II' and 'Maze Maker III') and a much larger piece titled simply 'Maze Maker (large version)'. The series ended spectacularly in the 2-metre high 'Daedalus/Icarus Matrix' cast in 1968-9 for Ayrton's full-scale maze in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, where the Maze Maker supports his winged son, Icarus, rising from the maze. However the conception of maze and maker as intertwined and interdependent was one which remained a central theme of Ayrton's work for the rest of his life, emerging in various forms in his later sculpture; Maze Maker I, therefore, is not only a fine sculpture in its own right, but a work of considerable significance for Ayrton's career as a whole. The religious/naturalistic imagery, with an agonised body configured of branches, roots and stones, builds imaginatively on Sutherland's own depictions of Christ's crucified suffering, first produced during this period. Michael Ayrton, British 1921-1975- Table Still life, 1954; oil on board, signed and dated 54, 69 x 110cm(ARR) Provenance: Christie's, London 20th March 2014 lot 73; Bonhams, London, 2nd June 2015 lot 89; Private collection, London. Note: Michael Ayrton was born in London and began his painting career at the age of 14. Ayrton travelled widely around Europe and spent much time in Italy where, in the 1940s, he was inspired by the works of the Quattrocento painters, particularly Piero della Francesca. He became preoccupied with Greek mythology after a visit to Cumae, with regular travels to Greece after 1957 influencing his subsequent artwork. Although Ayrton continued to draw, producing etchings and lithographs throughout his career, from 1955 sculpture became his preferred medium, with his many bronzes of famous mythical characters such as the Minotaur and Daedalus and Icarus remaining his best-known works. Est: £3,500 - £4,000

            Michael Ayrton, British 1921-1975- Maze Maker III, 1964/65; bronze, edition 7/9, 26cm high (including base), (ARR) Provenance: Bonhams, London, Modern British and Irish Art, 22nd November 2016, Lot 199. Note: Michael Ayrton was British artist who produced work in a wide range of media, including sculptures, prints and paintings, over the course of his career. His style has been influenced by artists including Graham Sutherland, Pavel Tchelitchew, and Henry Moore. Indeed, it was after Moore’s advice that Ayrton began to seriously engage in sculpture. Ayrton was particularly preoccupied with the Classical Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, which he connected with his struggles and ambitions as an artist. This artwork, entitled Maze Maker III, is a further example of Ayrton’s interest in the story of Daedalus, which in this instance is focused on his construction of the labyrinth to contain the Minotaur. The figures of Daedalus and the Minotaur, alongside other mythological characters, repeatedly recur in bronzes made by Ayrton, making this theme a key feature of Ayrton’s most famous work.
