AMALIA AVIA PEÑA (Santa Cruz de la Zarza, Toledo, 1930 - Madrid, 2011). "Los Gabrieles - Seville". Oil on canvas. Presents on the back label of the Biosca Gallery (Madrid). Signed in the lower right corner. Titled on the back. Measurements: 75 x 162 cm; 78 x 165 cm (frame). As is usual in Amalia Avia's work, the piece follows an aesthetic of classical and traditional heritage with a frontal view of Los Gabrieles, Seville. In it, the urban fabric is not seen in its entirety, thus showing only a section that would correspond to the artist's own gaze located in front of the portal. The vaporous transparencies of the atmosphere and the lack of passers-by in the street, show how Avia gives the protagonism of the scene to the urban framework, thought from a poetic and lyrical solitude. Amalia Avia began her artistic career in the fifties, in the Madrid studio of Eduardo Peña. At the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando she met many of her future generation, among them Antonio López García, Julio and Francisco López Hernández, Isabel Quintanilla and Lucio Muñoz, whom she married in 1960. Avia made his individual debut in 1959 at the Fernando Fe gallery in Madrid, and in 1964 he entered the outstanding Juan Mordó gallery in the same city. In 1972 he joined another mythical gallery, the Biosca in Madrid, where he had previously exhibited in 1961. Apart from his individual exhibitions, Avia participated in numerous international exhibitions focused on Spanish realism. His work was also part of the exhibition "Otra realidad. Compañeros en Madrid", organized by Caja Madrid. She was also awarded the Goya de la Villa de Madrid prize in 1978. Amalia Avia's painting focuses mainly on the city of Madrid, and stands as a portrait of its streets, its stores, its facades deteriorated by the passage of time. In her first period her work denotes a more social character, although the human figure will gradually disappear from her paintings. Avia herself has acknowledged on several occasions that hers is not a hyperrealist painting, and that she does not seek technical perfection but to be able to reflect the imprint of the human, of those anonymous lives that attract her so much. In the eighties he also began to paint interiors, always captured with the same personal and subjective atmosphere. Throughout his career, Avia held solo exhibitions in leading galleries throughout Spain, as well as in the Directorate General of Fine Arts in Madrid and the School of Fine Arts in Salamanca and, outside our country, in the Müller room in Winterthur (Switzerland, 1975), the international fair FIAC in Paris (1979) and the Basel Biennial (Switzerland, 1985). Also, in 1997 an anthological exhibition was dedicated to him at the Centro Cultural de la Villa in Madrid. His work is currently represented in the Contemporary Art Museums of Madrid and Toledo, the Juan March Foundation, the National Gallery of Sofia (Bulgaria), the museums of Vitoria, León, Elche, Winterthur, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Vilafamés, the Solidarity Museum and the Salvador Allende Residence in Chile, the Municipal Museum of Madrid, the Extremadura Museum of Contemporary Art in Cáceres and the collections of the Chase Manhattan Bank, the Banco Hipotecario, the Hispano Americano, the Bank of Spain and the Spanish Explosives Union.

As usual in Amalia Avia's work, the piece follows an aesthetic of classical and traditional heritage with a frontal view of a building in Calle Alfonso XII in Madrid. In it, the majestic building is not seen in its entirety, showing only a section that would correspond to the artist's own gaze in front of the doorway. The vaporous transparency of the windows does not reveal the presence of any inhabitant, nor are passers-by seen in the street, so that Avia gives the protagonism of the scene to the urban fabric, conceived from a poetic and lyrical solitude.
