Signed and dated "MARCH AVERY '96" lower right. Inscribed "'View from the Museum of Natural History - Winter' / ('Central Park - Winter') / by March Avery 34 x 46 1996" to back of stretcher. Housed in a black and silvered modernist frame. Canvas: 34" H x 46" W. Frame: 41 3/4" H x 53 1/2" W. Biographical note: "March Avery's paintings follow the colorist tradition set forth by her father, Milton Avery, relying on a sophisticated palette of evocative colors to render the simplified child-like forms that characterize her scenes of life. Avery knew at an early age that she would be a painter. She never considered anything else. Trained by her famous father and surrounded by other artists who were her father's friends, such as Mark Rothko, Adolf Gottlieb, Barnett Newman, Byron Brown, and Marsden Hartley, she developed her talent. Despite her artistic roots, she never attended art school or received instruction from her father. âMy father did not teach me. He was a very non-verbal painter. I would show him one of my paintings and all he would say was âpaint another.ââ She developed her own distinctive style of art emerging from her visualization of the world around her. Her work utilizes flattened planes of color that combine to depict the soft simple moments of everyday life, reminding the viewer that often the simplest times carry the most impactful meanings. Her work has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Now in her late eighties, March Avery still dedicates herself to her work and paints five days a week out of her Manhattan home. Frame: 17 3/8 x 14 1/8 x 1 in.

Titled "Blue Tree Blue Sky", oil on canvas, signed upper left MARCH AVERY '67. 28 x 37 in. March Avery is the daughter of artists Milton Avery and Sally Michel, all three are outstanding colorists. The Averys spent virtually all of their summers together in favored locations in Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire as well as in more distant destinations in Mexico, Canada, and Europe. In each place they sketched the mountains and the seas, the forests and the beaches as well as family members and friends. Often, they were able to complete watercolors of those scenes while still on vacation. They would then take their drawings back to New York where Milton would develop many of his into oil paintings during the winter months. Other characteristics of this familys style are the flat picture plane, often interlocking simple shapes and over time, greater simplicity of forms.
