PROPERTY FROM THE JESUS AND MARITESS PINEDA COLLECTION Mother and Child signed and dated 1976 (lower left) oil on canvas 24" x 36" (61 cm x 91 cm) WRITE UP Like many artists that came before him, Tam Austria was enamored with the provincial Philippines. By the time he had entered the art scene bearing the beauty of his hometown Tanay as a veritable muse, many of his contemporaries were taken with foreign and modern painting styles. When asked about his continued persistence in painting this kind of genre (“Is your art pertinent for the times?”) was a simple “I don’t know. It seems pertinent for me.” The lot in hand still features Austria’s penchant for the provincial, however, it included the influence of Cubism in his works. The severity of the Cubist method of shattering an image down to its basic planer shapes conflicts with Austria’s inherent sense of romanticism – instead, he still retained the romantic image of a woman with her children with her basketful of wares in front of her. However, the Cubist influence revealed itself in the prismatic quality of the colors he used. Shard edges and sudden color changes make do with the Cubistic influence Austria wanted his works to have. In that way, he bridged the vast difference between cubism and romanticism, dousing the comfortable image of the provincial Philippines with a shock of modernism that appealed to a huge crowd. Untitled signed and dated 1998 (upper left) oil on canvas 20” x 22” (51 cm x 56 cm WRITE UP Folk subjects, with a fuse of women at work and nature, invariably adorned Tam Austria’s oeuvre. Hailing from Tanay, a 52-kilometer distance east of Angono, Rizal, the young Austria would frequently travel to Angono to learn from the great master painter. There, he absorbed his mentor’s practices of mural-making and his depiction of Philippine folk, which is clearly evident in Austria’s paintings. Regarded as one of CCP’s Thirteen Artists of 1970, Austria’s pieces centered around the locals and their daily lives. His works are marked by his linear and meticulously elegant style, a testament to his dedication and precision, ingenious sense of color, and incorporation of sepia brown tones. With this crafted technique, Austria impressively illustrated his regional folk genre and interpretation of Philippine mythology in his works. This untitled piece from 1998 depicts two women in muted hues outlined with graphite. One woman holds a bowl full of grains, while the other has a bamboo wind instrument. Birds and butterflies fly across the canvas, and falling leaves signify the breath of wind. At first glance, it could appear that they were feeding–or about to feed–some animals. Nevertheless, Austria’s images serve to highlight women and their roles and contributions to society, challenging the long-standing notion of women as mere household decorations. (Jessica Magno)

Tres Marias signed and dated 1991 (upper left) pastel on paper 22" x 28" (56 cm x 71 cm) PROVENANCE Private collection, Manila Folk subjects feature heavily in Tam Austria’s oeuvre. An heir worthy of Carlos “Botong” Francisco, the young Austria had frequently visited the great master at his Angono residence, soaking up from him the practices of mural-making and the native beauty of the Philippine countryside. This influence is evident in Tres Marias. “Quite visibly a realist” as he describes himself, Austria’s works take after Botong’s love for the locals. Here, he blends woman and nature, blurring the lines from where the women start and the flowers end as he tightly packs the elements together. Hard at work, Austria’s women embody the strength inherent in their characteristics. Their place in society transcends far beyond our limited imagination – women exist in the work field, they toil in the rice fields, they keep their homes, and so much more. Long kept invisible, the woman’s place has been steadily illuminated through the years, elevating their position of holding up half the sky into collective consciousness. (Hannah Valiente)

Tam Austria (b. 1943) Harvest Scene signed and dated 1992 (upper left) oil on canvas 28” x 40” (71 cm x 102 cm) Tam Austria's artwork showcases a distinctly Filipino ensemble of characters that form the essence of his uncomplicated, rural paradise. Frequently centered around familial and traditional themes such as the Mother and Child motifs, depictions of the mythica or quasi-religious, or ordinary individuals immersed in labor, Austria's creations encapsulate the unpretentious Filipino way of life. In doing so, he highlights the allure of rural existence, which has now become a distant recollection in today's modern society. Another intriguing aspect of Austria’s practice is his aesthetic within the context of Filipino Modernism. Relatively speaking, a glance at the artists and artistic styles that developed during the 20th Century, one may notice a trend towards hard-edged, planar, and even geometric styles. Whether the work was one of Abstract Expressionism or done by a member of the Neo-Realists, it's hard not to notice their thematic disposition. Austria’s work can thus be seen as a relative breath of fresh air. His works seemingly contain softer-edges and a predominant use of pastels. All of which lead to a lighter, more hopeful, and more emancipatory feeling and attitude. (Jed Daya)

Fiesta Scene signed and dated 1976 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 60" (91 cm x 152 cm) PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Manila Tam Austria is widely revered for his mastery of watercolor, a medium that allows him to express his artistic vision with finesse and subtlety. His delicate brushwork, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to capture the nuances of light and shadow demonstrate his technical prowess. With a masterful command of the watercolor medium, he creates ethereal and evocative compositions that transport viewers into a realm of beauty and contemplation. His works often revolve around the beauty and serenity of nature. Inspired by the landscapes, flora, and fauna of the Philippines, he creates paintings that exude tranquility, harmony, and a sense of awe. Through his meticulous brushstrokes and careful layering of colors, Austria invites viewers to connect with the inherent grace and majesty of the natural world. But what arguably sets Austria apart from his peers is the perceived lightness of his works. While, relatively speaking, most artists belonging to Austria’s generation often employed a hard-edged, rough, and almost utilitarian approach to their works, Austria has managed to utilize his chosen medium to fulleffect. Bringing out the airy and graceful essence of both his style and subject-matter. (J.D.)

Maria Makiling, the legendary protector/guardian spirit of Mount Makiling, has become one of the most revered legendary figures in Philippine mythology. Her storied presence as the enchantress of Mount Makiling has been immortalized in numerous accounts. During the precolonial era, the ancient Tagalogs venerated her as an anito sent by Bathala to aid humanity in their living. Jose Rizal retold the story of Maria Makiling in his work titled Mariang Makiling, published on November 23, 1890, in La Solidaridad. Rizal describes the deity as "a young girl, tall, well-shaped, with large black eyes, and long and abundant hair; her color was clear and light brown, the "kayumangging-kaligatan," as the Tagalogs say; her hands and feet, small and exquisite; and the expression of her face, always grave and serious." Rizal adds, "Mariang Makiling is always preserved a virgin, slender, and mysterious as the spirit of the mountain." In this 1989 work by Austria, the alluring Maria Makiling can be seen sitting on the ground, caressing a wild deer on her lap. Her divinely sublime face and bodily gesture invoke graceful femininity, further highlighted by her long, wavy hair that sways exquisitely with the gentle breeze. An abundance of lush flora surrounds her, with the purity of nature complementing her immaculate persona as the custodian of the mountain and everything that lives in it and gains from its blessings. As a young boy, he created a realistic oil painting of Christ with a crown of thorns. His work was noted as impressive, for he was not even 10 years old at that time. The priest, from the parish he attended as an altar server, assisted him in securing a four-year high school scholarship. In 1960, Austria studied at the University of Santo Tomas as a fine arts student. He was a standout among his peers and he even won several prizes for his pieces. Although his themes and manner of technical execution seem to nod at the influence of Botong Francisco, the young artist was able to evolve his own style that resulted in poetic tableaus of genre scenes. A decade later, in 1970, Austria represented the Filipino community at the International Art Festival in Berkeley, California. He was also bestowed by the Cultural Center of the Philippines with its highlycoveted Thirteen Artists Award. Now, Austria is a sought-after artist and a proven favorite among art collectors. From a son of peasant parents from Tanay, Rizal, he had indeed gone a long way from his humble origins. (P.I.R.)

Maria Makiling signed and dated 1982 (upper left) oil on canvas 36" x 48" (91 cm x 122 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Tam Austria is an undisputed master of the folk genre. Much like his mentor and luminary, the revered Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco, Austria draws from a wide variety of native influences. One subject that has recurrently appeared in Austria’s oeuvre is the lovely image of the diwata (mythical muse). Such is the case with this piece, in which Austria immortalizes the most famous diwata in Philippine folklore, Maria Makiling, the guardian spirit of Mount Makiling. Austria’s depiction of Maria stays faithful to the native narrative; a breathtakingly beautiful, enchanted woman with long, black hair, possessing a light brown skin tone or kayumangging kaligatan in the Tagalog lexicon, having a slender body frame, and always bearing a solemn facial expression. Here, the native enchantress delicately flaunts her divine and graceful femininity emphasized by her sublime countenance and elegant bearing. The idyllic native setting, populated with lush flora and dynamic fauna, evokes a storied past. Here, Maria, the protector of Mount Makiling and its surrounding environs, harmoniously communes with nature. Without a doubt, Austria’s works embody the quintessential native spirit, capturing a time in our collective history when man held nature in high regard, exalting it as the primary sustainer of life. Austria’s works are marked by his constant fiddling with maximalism and meticulousness to minute details. The artist’s employment of maximalism reflects what retired art professor and former NCCA chairman Felipe M. de Leon Jr. writes as “a manifestation of the Filipinos’ highly sensitive and expressive nature that is rooted in our communal existence.” Coupled with his painstaking creative process, Austria confers his works with an appealing richness and dynamism in composition. This piece—and Austria’s works in general—exudes a mystical quality that encapsulates our collective longing for the former glory of a bygone era. The artist says of this attribute in his art: “I think my work reflects a number of basic truths, perhaps, too, nostalgia for the good things slipping away. Then there are the earth, the fields, the sky, the quiet corner people long for. Perhaps people are drawn to my painting by common feelings that go beyond art.” (A.M.)

Tam Austria (b. 1943) The Fisherman and His Family

Tam Austria (b. 1943) The Fisherman and His Family signed and dated 1984 (upper left) oil on canvas 36" x 48" (91 cm x 122 cm) Tam Austria's artistic ventures began early in his life when he trained under the artistic helms of Carlos "Botong" Francisco. Like his mentor, Austria is a painter of the local, the native, and the natural. In an interview, the artist referred to himself as a "naturalist." Austria further expounded that, to a great extent, his art was influenced by the community he considered his home. "Community, I think, played a greater role than what I learned in college. Because within the community, artists can find the spirit of encouragement, and they can learn how to enhance human interest," Austria explained. Art critic Alice Guillermo wrote: "Indeed, one can say that Austria is a true descendant of his townmate, the National Artist Carlos Francisco, known for his amazing natural and intuitive painting skills. Austria's paintings in oil on canvas are marked by a spontaneous linear energy, which possesses a narrative as its own, which in combination with color, is powered with a true creative energy." Austria's oil paintings of countryside scenes depicting its idyllic living and its ordinary folks are intricately delineated and aesthetically engaging to the viewer's eye. His sharp sense of composition combined with his masterful handling of figures and colors are established in his meticulous attention to the smallest detail and virtuosity in figuration and the dynamics of realism. Austria obtained his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas in 1954. He received the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 1970. During the same year, he held his first exhibition at Marcel's Gallery of Fine Arts in Oakland, California, and became the representative of the Filipino community at the International Art Festival in Berkeley, California. This was followed by exhibitions in San Francisco, California, as well as the Hidalgo Gallery in Makati (1972), Hyatt Regency (1975), and Sining Kamalig (1976). In 1982, he reached a high point in his professional painting career when he became one of the five finalists of the 1983 Mobil Art Awards.
