Così l'artista: "Non è tanto l'universo di violenza emanato dal rosso in quanto forza psicologica a catturare il mio interesse. Il movimento, la luce impliciti in questo colore sono gli argomenti che giustificano ai miei occhi il suo impiego. Il semplice credere in un significato poetico del dinamismo legittima, per me, la continuità del suo utilizzo. Il monocromo è un vuoto pieno di tensioni, vi si incontrano i fluidi incoscienti, subcoscienti e magnetici".

Unten mittig mit Filzstift in Schwarz signiert "Bernard Aubertin" und datiert. Der Maler und Objektkünstler Bernard Aubertin gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Künstlergruppe ZERO. 1955 studierte er an der École des Métiers d’Art und der École de Formation des Professeurs de Dessin in Paris. Seine frühen Werke setzen sich intensiv mit der Kunst der Vorkriegsavantgarde auseinander und knüpfen an den Kubismus und Futurismus an. Zunächst bestimmen figurative Inhalte wie Portraits, Landschaften oder Stillleben seine Bilder. Dies ändert sich jedoch, als er 1957 Yves Klein kennenlernt: seine Werke werden zunehmend monochrom und er beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der Farbe Rot. Sie steht für Feuer, Blut und Energie, symbolisiert den Ursprung allen Lebens und die Kraft spiritueller Existenz. Zunehmend verwendet er Feuer als aktives Gestaltungselement. In zahlreichen konzeptionellen Kompositionen setzt er seine Werke echten Flammen aus und überlässt deren Willkür den gestalterischen Prozess. Der Betrachter erlebt so die Transformation des Feuers von einer zerstörerischen zu einer schöpferischen Kraft.
