    19th Century Bronze Sculpture of the 16th Century Scientific Genius Gerardus Mercator Holding a Globe by Antoine Pierre Aubert (French 1853-1912).  Aubert is well known for his sculptures of Greek and Roman classical subjects. In this sculpture of Mercator, the geographer, cosmographer, and cartographer who created the 1569 world map based on his innovation which represented sailing courses in strait lines.     After Antoine Pierre Aubert (French, 1853-1912). "Horace" brass sculpture, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A lovely brass sculpture of the great Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus, or Horace, depicted clothed in toga and wearing the poet's laurel crown as he sits on a curule chair. He holds a pen in one hand while on his left leg rests a scroll, upon which is inscribed: "DEL ART / CHAMPETRE / HEUREUX QUI / DE SES MAINS / COMME NOS / PREMIERS PERES / CULTIVE EN PAIX / SES CHAMPS ET / VIT LIBRE / D’AFFAIRES. ORACE / ART," roughly translating to "Led happy pastoral art, which with their own hands our fore fathers cultivated their fields in peace and saw freedom in their affairs. Horace."     Bronze, patinated France, presumably late 19th century Pierre Aubert (1853-1912), French sculptor Signed on the reverse 'Aubert' Dimensions: 31 x 27 x 13.5 cm. Good condition The sculpture of the French sculptor Pierre Aubert was made in the late 19th century. A seated female figure swathed in a Greek garb is shown. Holding an arrow in her left hand, she seems already to grip for another. The skin of a lion falls sideways from her stool. Pierre Aubert's figure is equipped the attributes of hunting. Allegories in historical garments were a popular subject of the sculptor. The sculpture is in good condition. The right foot is slightly loosened and the patina is partial rubbed. The work is signed on the reverse "Aubert". The sculpture measures 31 x 27 x 13.5 cm. (bed) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
