    • Clare Atwood,  Industrial interior, 1911;
      Nov. 29, 2023

      Clare Atwood,  Industrial interior, 1911;

      Est: £700 - £900

      Clare Atwood,  British 1866-1962 -  Industrial interior, 1911;  oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 'Clare Atwood 1911', 51 x 61 cm (ARR)  Provenance: The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson (1939-2019) Note:  Atwood was part of a interesting circle of lesbian artists and writers that included Radclyffe Hall and her partners Christabel Marshall and Edith Craig. The artist had her first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in 1912 and was commissioned to paint war scenes for the Canadian Government through the Canadian War Memorials Fund. Atwood created scenes of railway stations and later the activities of the Women's Voluntary Service. A number of these war related works are now in the Imperial War Museum Collection. The artist also created works depicting the interiors of theatres and markets, similar in style to the present work.

    • Clare "Tony" Atwood (British, 1866 - 1962)
      Aug. 04, 2022

      Clare "Tony" Atwood (British, 1866 - 1962)

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

      "Madeira (Portugal) (Quinta da Boa Vista, Funchal)". Circa 1935. Oil on canvas. 20 x 24 inches; 25 1/2 x 29 1/4 inches (overall). Framed. Exhibited: Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 1945: "New English Art Club" which was arranged through the Art Exhibition Bureau, Burlington Gardens. Note: In researching this painting we discovered an April 10th, 1935 letter from Madie Gibson to Edith Craig, with whom Clare Atwood was in a queer poly and life-long relationship, along with the dramatist and noted advocate for women's rights Christabel Marshall (British, 1871 - 1960), a letter which anticipates this painting. (The three women are buried together at St. John the Baptist's Church, Small Hythe, England.) In the letter there is a discussion about Atwood's upcoming trip to Madeira: "...happy that Tony [Clare] Atwood is able to go to Madeira as she will love the island..." and the letter writer wonders how Atwood might paint the "glory of spring" in Madeira? In the painting "Madeira," the small solitary figure that is near hidden in the landscape is wearing Clare Atwood's signature hat, a good example of which can be seen in the the self portrait of Clare Atwood: "Self Portrait in a Hat with a Basket of Vegetables," at the National Trust, Fenton House, North London. The Gibson letter, therefore, poses the question to which the painting “Madeira” is Atwood's answer. We would like to thank the: "Ellen Terry and Edith Craig Database" for their assistance with our research into the history and backstory of this painting.

      Attributed to Clare Atwood NEAC ASWA, British 1866-1962- The Wheelwright's Shop; oil on bo

      Est: £600 - £800

      Attributed to Clare Atwood NEAC ASWA, British 1866-1962- The Wheelwright's Shop; oil on board, 19.8x29.7cm (ARR) Note: Clare Atwood was an English artist who was active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, producing art in what would prove to be a particularly fertile period for the development of British painting. Atwood studied at the Westminster School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art.Having first exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1893, she became a full member in 1912, and in the same year her work was exhibited at the Carfax Gallery. This small-scale, muted and understated painting displays an affinity with the more commonplace subject-matter which can be perceived in some of the work produced by Atwood’s contemporaries in the NEAC. Paintings by Atwood are in the collection of the Tate Galleries, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Imperial War Museum, all in London, alongside others.
